Ive just had my new machine delivered.

Q6600, 8800gtx, 4gb ram, raid etc.

Now those stupid monkeys at Dell have only gone and put 32bit vista on there, hence my machine can only see 3gb ram. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhh idiots!!!!!

There's nothing crap about Dell. Don't think I'd buy a high-end machine from them (even though I love the XPS 710 cases), but their cheaper systems and notebooks are really good.

I am not going to bother trying to argue about it I just think they are crap, we have had Dells through the ages from out first proper computer which was a Dell Dimension XPS P60 (60mhz) which was build like a tank and still works. Through to a Dell Dimension 8200 which is shoddy to say the least. We also have had 3 Dell laptops all completely rubbish (although not owned by us). I would advise any one to build their own, or buy a Mac (lol)

Build your own laptop? that would be fun to try and do...

As for buy a mac - go wash your mought with soap, buiying a mac is like building a system for £1600 three times, and binning two of them. waste of money. IMO.

Then again, at least you didnt mention SONY! lol..

I've bought (on behalf of friends, family and myself) over 15 machines from Dell in the past few years, I've yet to hear about any of them developing a fault (and I'd be the first to know).

Dell make it quite clear on their website what you are getting before purchase.
When the order confirmation said Vista 32bit that is what it would have meant - even if you'd ordered 8GB of RAM.

Never buy desktop from dell, much prefer having a computer where I can choose every single part.

Laptops however I do buy form dell, and in my experience they have been great, Quite rugged too my current laptop has fallen of tables and bashed about endlessly and is still working like a trooper after nearly two years.

The order confirmation did not say either 32bit or 64bit. I thought common sense would say if you pick 4gb ram, then you expect 4gb to be available, hence 64 bit installed.

MarcLister yes I would have expected it!

Dell systems are great value for money but they sacrifice some quality to save the cost and very slow support/delivery if any one of the parts becomes faulty, especially the DVD drives.

A couple of my friends bought Dell PC, both of them had DVD drive problems, it turned out to be a cheap generic & unbranded drive which caused all kind of instability/crashing problem on £900+ system and the other with tray sticking out! It took Dell a few weeks to dispatch a replacement drive after numerous e-mail replies!

Didn't they give you an option to use Vista 64-bit instead of 32? I would've assumed they'd have defaulted to 32 unless you picked the 64-bit option in the custom options? If you ordered 64-bit then get on the phone. :)

Personally I've not had any problems with Dell machines or support, whether at work (where we use OptiPlex GX270s and GX740s) or for relatives.

nope, there is no option to choose. Apparently they dont ship 64bit on dimensions. They are refunding me the price of 1gb stick (£45) but im still annoyed

I'm surprised that they refunded you since most companies would have probably said it was your responsibility to check what you ordered, so that's good in my opinion. :)

They probably want to try and appease him; keep him happy and quiet. The customer might be wrong, but they'd rather have quiet customers than noisy ones.

i dont think dell does 64bit versions of any OS, they never did when i was fixing their machines for 6 months some time ago,

you could afford that nice machine you can afford another copy of vista64 therefore,

They will usually give you up to £100 not to return the machine - if you haven't accepted the £45 I'd hold out for the full £100 and buy a copy of Vista x64 with the cash ;)
