Stupid Dell!

They will usually give you up to £100 not to return the machine - if you haven't accepted the £45 I'd hold out for the full £100 and buy a copy of Vista x64 with the cash ;)

damnit, already accepted the £45. I even sent him a link to ocuk's vista and asked them to give me the money to buy it :(

Thats what i noticed on rock laptops, they were shipping 32bit vista with 4 gigs of ram, I emailed them before i ordered though and they whacked 64 on instead.

I am not going to bother trying to argue about it I just think they are crap, we have had Dells through the ages from out first proper computer which was a Dell Dimension XPS P60 (60mhz) which was build like a tank and still works. Through to a Dell Dimension 8200 which is shoddy to say the least. We also have had 3 Dell laptops all completely rubbish (although not owned by us).

So you've had what 6 or 7 Dell machines at the most and that qualifies you to say they are crap. Firstly if they were that crap you would have stopped buying them after the first one or two purchases. And you haven't defined 'shoddy' or 'completely rubbish' although I don't think anyone's going to value your opinion enough to ask you to explain.
For the record, I have shifted about £50k - £60k worth of Dell equipment in the last 8 - 10 months comprising laptops, printers, servers, monitors, switches and probably more, and haven't had one single failure in any part of any machine. Not big compared to some companies obviously but I've a fair idea of the build quality of their stuff. And if I did I would know about it because I'm responsible for ongoing maintenance of most of the stuff, it's not stuff I sell and run away from.

It's perfectly fine to make your point obviously but it's silly seeing threads branding suppliers & manufacturers 'stupid' or 'rubbish.' If they were that bad they wouldn't be in business.

what OEM license? They only supplied 32 bit. Can I use the code on a 64 bit installation?
Yep. We've had threads about this - you just have to find a disc. Not sure if Dell'll be interested in sending you one.

People are sheep, and Joe public have no real idea what to look for in a quality PC. Clever advertising. Look at PC world.

Not saying Dell are particularly bad, but they ain't great either. I've had to fix a couple for people in the past. Whats with the HD partitions aswell (off topic) I really don't know why they have the 2 partitions before and after the main partition the user sees.

I know what you mean about the partitions. This machine has 320gb x 2 in raid 0 with only one partition (plus the recovery partition). :(

Forgot about that one - just bell them up - might be worth offering to send back your 'copy' of 32 and seeing if they'll send you a 64 one - they might be a bit reticent as they do set up their drives in unusual ways and it'll mean a full re-install - but worth a try! Just make sure that ALL of your hardware is supported. :p
