Friend online I've known for 1+ year hates me because I spoke his first name

This is PS4, and I've met you. Your mind would fit in perfectly with us lot :D

Add me if you're on PS4: D-i-d-d-u-m-S

Edit: and anyone else who plays Fortnite, Overwatch, Destiny 2, CoD, GTA V, Rocket League and more.

Will do when i get home in Rome wtm

Some people get weird about this stuff. A friend of mine recorded some game play of something online and said he was going to upload it and two of the people who were in the video started to have a paddy about it because their voices were on the video and they didn't agree. To the point of even threatening to sue him for uploading it without their permission. Needless to say it got uploaded and he is still waiting his summons :D.

On a side note off shoot i still find it funny that people think it's against the law to film them in public.

Nah, he was just somebody you talked to.
This has now become stapled into culture, people who can't talk in real life but can chat for ages on social media and call them friends.

Hate to be the **** that throws the definition of friend at you but:

"a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically one exclusive of sexual or family relations."

Nothing in there about having to meet anyone face to face.

It's also amusing that you don't consider online as "real life", it's all real life. I'm 36 so don't consider myself a youth of today.

A child without a wifi connection is a lost sole, it is sad to see frankly and it's no surprise that people like our OP exist.

Do you have kids? My kids are more at home outside playing in the sand and soil, looking for insects, going on nature trails, building dens than they are on the internet. They are definitely not lost souls without wifi. In fact, we're off Yurting at the end of May, 3 nights with no electricity at all. Kids love it. And my daughter's had a tablet for the last 3 years.

They are swimming against the tide of life?

:D:D

Facebook does but if I don't know them IRL I wouldn't call them a friend.
Perhaps I've got to get used to the term meaning more than it used to.

You've got to bear in mind that many of us grew up with friends that we never met. It's absolutely normal for us! I've known a few guys for about 12 years who I'd consider very good friends, but I've never met them. It just doesn't matter!

Some super interesting replies here and I want to clear things up.

1. I feel like I did not breach his confidence because like I said, it was in the confine of a ps4 party chat between people he also deemed friends and not strangers. I should note these other 2 Americans disclosed first names on first ask.
2. The "lol teenagers" posts. I won't give exact years but we are both not teenagers. I could have 100% not made this post at all and moved on but tbh, I have NEVER had someone react this way and was just wanting confirmation I'm not being super unreasonable given the circumstances outlined.
3. The IRL vs internet discussion. For me there is no difference. If we discuss music, films, books and just happen to be distanced by geography, I don't see why you would not call that person a friend. Still having internet friends is less "hurtful" if stuff does go wrong and why I have preferred it.

Your friend's got issues. You did nothing wrong. End of discussion.

this tbh... it was just a first name and just mentioned in a private chat with two other people then hardly the end of the world - the reaction says it all... rather than "mate that wasn't cool, you know I don't like my name being known" and then perhaps the OP to apologise the guy has gone and thrown his toys out of the pram

I can think of a few similar IRL scenarios.

People who have been known by a nickname most of their life quite often don't like people using their given name. Same for people who prefer to use their middle name rather than their first.

I went to a school with a lad that everybody knew as Scott because that's simply all we'd know him as, turns out that was his middle name, his first name was Hayden and absolutely hated it when people used it, even his family called him Scott.

That’s a shame as you would fit right in. First day a couple people got the game we went in a private world so I blew them up with a buzzard, shot them with sniper and machine guns while they only had pistols. Some say I’m a ****, I say it’s how GTA has always worked :D
