LG 34GK950G, 3440x1440, G-Sync, 120Hz

Everyone here is setting themselves up for disappointment by tossing around the idea that the term 'overclock' is being used to attract gamers. This monitor is going to be 100hz native, with an overclock to 120hz. We just have to accept the truth now, instead of wasting time. Daniel was wrong, and we are not getting anything better than the Alienware.

I disagree. The LM340UW5-SSA1 panel does feature G-Sync, according to panelook. In addition, the specs of the UW4 list that as having a 300cd/m2 brightness vs the 400cd/m2 on the UW4. So this aligns with the LG spec of 400cd/m2 on the 950G. Further to that, the UW5 does come with HDR 400 certification, unlike the UW4, and again, the 950G is advertised as featuring that. If they were using the UW4 panel it wouldn't. With all of this evidence, I cannot fathom how LG have screwed up their official specs so much. The only question is over the overclock, but I am very much inclined to think this is pure marketing speak to appeal to the gamer segment of the market... although I don't think they know their market very well!

I really hope you are right. The Dell is on sale for 899USD right now and that is realllly tempting. Hope this monitor is going to be worth the wait.

We won't know how good it is until it's reviewed, but all specs and evidence points to this using the UW5 panel, I'm convinced of that now, so it should be a step-up from the Alienware AW34. I can't see 120Hz being an issue as the panel is 144Hz native, therefore there will be no flicker. It's also a bit brighter and hopefully the Nano IPS will help slightly with colours... although I don't expect miracles here. HDR is nothing to get excited about at 400cd/m2, that's for sure. At the end of the day, if BLB is minimal (always a lottery though, and there will be some) then we will have a winner I think. :)

I also disagree. There is so much that points towards this monitor using the UW5 panel. Too much for it not to really. If true, it will be 144Hz native. Period. Whether the specs list it as 144 Hz or not, because that's what the UW5 is rated for.

To answer your later question (FreeSync 2), yes, the marketing department is apparently that incompetent.

So recently on reddit some guy claimed that he was at Gamescom and that the Dell rep said they were going to show a new ultrawide. Then the next day another rep said that it was a mistake.

Now all of a sudden I see it sold out on Amazon and bestbuy has dropped the price to almost 900 USD. Could they be clearing out stock for a new version of the monitor? or a follow up?

If they are it will be with the same new UW5 panel... so there won't be much to separate it and the 950G, on price as well as spec... a bit of competition is no bad thing however. Seems like the LG will be available first though. It would make sense Dell would want to announce something fairly soon if they want to steal LG's thunder.

Interesting that you don't get the RGB Sphere lighting with the Freesync 'F' version. Clearly they are cutting costs on that one to get it to a certain price point... makes sense given AMD are so far behind in respect to GPUs that can push it. They're almost catering to a different market with that model. A 2080/2080Ti will be a great partner for the 'G'.

I'd buy Dell over LG anyday. LG insults US customers with a 1 yr warranty, and have a bad rep when it comes to customer service.

EDIT: If this monitor is 120hz native, then its a good reason to go with it over the Dell. Im hearing now that its going to cost 1399 USD, which is ridiculous. The Dell is on sale today for 829 USD

Yes but I was referring to a rumoured and as-yet unannounced Dell that would also use the UW5 panel. Such a monitor won't be that cheap and will be in line with the cost of the LG. The existing AW34 (with the UW4 panel) is certainly available for an attractive price, although cheapest I've seen it in UK is £850.

The LG USA spec sheet is pretty bad, stating Radeon adaptive tech and HDR400... DP1.2 can't process HDR.

I think this overclock label, and discussion, is misdirected. If the UW5 panel is used, there is no overclock. If the UW4 panel is used, then it is overclocked to achieve 120Hz. I don't think the overclock label in the current marketing is related to the G-Sync module... I've never seen specs released before stating the capability of the module, and there are several 2560 x 1440 at 165Hz monitors on the market that require more bandwidth than 3440 x 1440 at 120Hz, so I don't think that the G-Sync module is an issue.

There is certainly plenty of evidence, and the word of Daniel, that points to the UW5 panel. I think the inclusion of "overclock" in marketing material is a screw up... Refer to the first paragraph in this post!

Will have to wait on the prices ofc, but all said, I do prefer the design language of the LG over the Alienware. The latter is not outrageous or anything by any stretch but the LG is even more subdued looking which I like (especially once VESA mounted). That said yea I'm not paying a $500 (US) premium thats for sure...

I also prefer the LG design over the Alienware, and of course the UW5 over the UW4 panel. Let's see what's going on this Friday morning at IFA Berlin.

EDIT: Lovely!

That's the UW5 panel.

Hi there,

Does anyone know, why these monitors (F & G variant) won't feature a usb-c connection like the others of LG's monitors? The biggest reason I wanted an LG monitor, was for the ease of use (i.e. one cable for my Laptop, including power, keyboard and mouse) as well as easily switching (or even PIP) between my Mac and my PC. Are the PIP and other productivity features from other monitors missing as well?

Exactly, all of these issues were from the beginning caused by overclocking the panels. First attempting overclocking 60 Hz UW2 panel to 100 Hz on Asus PG348Q or Acer X34, which caused tons of issues like flickering, scanlines, losing signal and etc. Then overclocking 100 Hz UW4 panel to 120 on for example Alienware AW3418DW. If UW5 panel is capable of 144 natively then it should have such issues.

I am wondering more about expectations for this monitor... We have been discussing the refresh rate benefits of the UW5 panel, but a quick search of the Alienware thread does not find any complaints from anyone about running at 120Hz flicker free. I'm sure there are some people out there with flicker issues, but it appears to be a small percentage, and Dell support have advised me that failure to run at 120Hz is grounds for replacement under warranty (this surprised me, but I have the chat log).

Therefore, I think our expectations should primarily be for better uniformity and reduced BLB with the UW5.

That's like your opinion, man. I'm not 100 % certain the promotion material is updated. :)
