Unsure what graphics card to buy - Agh!

I've recently knocked up a new system with the following specs:

Ryzen 5 2600
16GB DDR4 3200MHz
Asus Strix B450 motherboard
240GB nvme drive
27" Samsung 1440p 144Hz monitor

I'm looking to game at 1440p, highest settings I can manage at as close to 144fps as possible.

At the moment I have a very old GTX 760 in the machine to tide me over. I'm looking to spend up to around £500 for a graphics card, and have waited until the benchmarks came out on the 20 series cards today before making a decision. If anything, the recent results have made it even harder to decide what to buy! Having had a think I've come up with a few ideas.

  1. Try to grab a used 1080Ti for around £500
  2. Buy a used GTX 1070 for £250, game at 1440p/60fps for a year and hope next year the 2080Ti drops in price. Or possibly a 980Ti.
  3. Wait for the GTX 2070 and hope it retails at £469 as currently speculated
Would like to know others thoughts on what they would choose to do.

Gtx 2070 and 2080 are pretty poor cards for the prices being asked.....

Its not looking like their going to be powerful enough to provide a satisfactory experience with much RTX stuff turned on a 2080 is barely any faster oc vs oc then a 1080ti cost more money and has less memory so at higher resolutions its possible in some scenarios that the 2080 is going to turn into a slide show whilst the 1080ti powers on with its higher complement of memory.....

2080ti is the choice if you have lots of ££££`s and want the best available otherwise used 10 series offers a far better proposition at this stage.

Honestly, it depends entirely on the games. If you simply marry yourself to the idea of 144 fps at all times and in all games, you're not gonna make it without selling a kidney.

Your best upgrade, outside of robbery, is to re-think your expectations.

This especially at qHD unless it is less taxing games.

Just as close to 144fps as possible really, won't lose any sleep over like 100fps or something. At least try to make use of the monitor though.

Poor value for money does not equal poor performance.

That's hilarious. The true slideshow will be if you attempt raytracing with a 1080Ti. Having 3gb more Vram count s for very little unless 4k gaming is your thing. You also forgot to mention a little thing called DLSS which will certainly be able to use alongside raytracing bumping up the 2080's performance to more acceptable levels.

2080Ti is the choice for 4k gamers imo. Anything less it's almost a waste. The 20 series is thr obvious choice if you care about future proof.

**yawn** obvious troll is obvious.... yes the 1080ti is completely unsuitable for RTX stuff but it's not looking promising that either a 2070 or a 2080 will be putting in a particularly competent showing with RTX stuff either......

Dlss support is thin on the ground in the near future. The 2070 and 2080 cards are a poor value for money proposition for gaming as it currently is and with less memory then a 1080ti neither is a completely safer 'future proof bet'

My monitor is 1440p/144hz and my 980 Ti achieves 60+ fps at max settings in all but a few titles I play (Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Warhammer: Total War being the only exceptions thus far) so a 1070 could serve you well. It depends on what games you play and how long you want the card to last. A second hand 1080 could fit the bill quite well?

Performance wise: 1060<1070<vega56<1070ti<1080<vega64<1080ti

So take your pick unless you want to take out a second mortgage for a 2080ti. The 2070 doesn't really fit anywhere.

Check out the benchmarks, can't remember which review but check the review thread, one of them I checked does a good comparison of a large range of cards with a large range of games. It's easy to make a good choice from them. Whilst if you're rich it's a no brainer to go with a GTX2080Ti, but from the best performance I'd say a GTX1080Ti is the best choice, however even that isn't the best value. Neither is the RTX cards.

Used 1080ti although I can actually see them selling for a little higher than they have been due to the 2080 benchmarks.

Indeed, which is quite telling. I'm part of it, saved for the 2080 and now just looking for 1080Ti on Ebay.

By the way a 1070 will give you around 100 frames in many games at 1440p, you wouldn't be always stuck at 60.

I'm considering picking up a 1080Ti, you can buy them new for £599 or similar on a number of sites.

Not sure RTX2080 is worth the wait or how long it's going to take for the price to drop.

OP has a budget, as set out in his post. If a card is overpriced for what it offers, and it's outside his price range, then it's not an option. So far from everything we've seen these cards haven't been priced appropriately, and with any luck the market will do something in regards to that. At that point they might be appropriate, but not now. 7nm cards might be just around the corner, and who knows what else may turn up.

As far as your performance quip, If I want the fastest or highest spec car I can get for £5000, getting recommended a Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita is a terrible answer.
