The issue with that one and most 550W PSUs and Vega cards is they tend to come with just one PCIe power cable with two connectors, and Vega likes two separate cables. Plus 550W is a bit borderline. Would go for 650W and ensure it has two cables for GPU.

Pretty sure you'll know about the poor VRMs/VRM cooling on budget Gigabyte B450/X470 boards, especially for 8 core/16 threads, so I'm guessing you still want to take the risk.

For a low-cost NVME M.2 I'd be looking at these. Used the WD Blue in a build two weeks ago and no issues. Better specs, warranty and probably better controller:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £103.68 (includes shipping: £8.70)

You could just get a single M.2 like this to start him off and free up a bit of money for better motherboard and PSU:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £77.69 (includes shipping: £8.70)

Maybe a case with better airflow for a Vega card.

Personally i would go for the Carbon Pro for future Zen 2 support - better VRM. And if you can't afford the 2700X i would again rather have the 2600X - unless he's clocking(?) - with an eye on Zen 2 upgrade in a couple of years time.

Upped the 550W to 650W for the V56 - and subbed a single 1Tb drive. Added a place holder case for anexample - good cooling but RGB :/

Removed cooler unless overclocking?

Oh, and this:

I am sure you'll be interested to hear, that competition at that end of the market is going to get weirder too, since from the info I have been given the 2700X is going to be <£199, the 2700 <£159 and the 2600 <£109, with the 2600x <£129, should see the prices from 1st July or maybe a day or two before apparently.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £978.09 (includes shipping: £13.20)

Even Asrock B450 Pro4 would have better VRM than that Gigabyte (or cheaper Asus boards) and for cheaper price.

And that £119 MSI would be certainly good for upgrade path with its good VRM.

For Vega card 650W would be better PSU size.
Vega's have very high power draw spikes at least at stock settings.

For normal home use that NVMe drive can really be scratched over to save budget for these other parts for more actual/longer time usage value.

even Vega 56 is a bit overkill for 1080P 60Hz- Tend to push that with 1080p 75/144hz freesync screens - and then ryzen is handicapped at 1080p as intel is the better performer - specially when GPU becomes more powerful!

though ryzen 3*** series should change this!

also rx5700 xt and Pro launch on the 7th - not sure how this would knock GPU pricing down

as for SSD..

save yourself some cash and gain a little bit of performance across the board -£46 saved

bit more saving, PSU isn't as higher tier but £25 saving

shame , ryzen 3600 and b450 MSI board and your away .

hard with intel as he's not gamign at 1080p 144hz plus !

pricing wise, i5 9600k + z390 + 16gb 3000hz ram will equal ryzen 3600x + x570 + 3600hz ram - and should offer almost identical performance

intel version - non K but with z390 board so in future they could stick in i7/i9 second hand etc - vega 64 with 2 free games and 240gb free

vs ryzen

note, i've kept vega 64 to match the pricing of your list with vega 56... and vega 64 IS A MASSIVE OVER KILL for 1080p 60hz, least tell them to upscale to 1440p with both vega cards !

and again, rx 3700 launches on the 7th - should be £350 price range for XT but is reference design

I'd side a little more with intel, but so hard to ignore ryzen 3600/X to be honest

thanks kurgen I'm now here I have returned the monitor to argos so I am now not tied to any monitor
guys I'm after a gaming rig that will play all games and can b future proofed I don't video edit and If I can get the finance I would say max spend 1400 to 1500 including monitor I am a laptop gamer but the specs I use were quite high for a gaming laptop and am now coming over to pc gaming as I would get max 3yrs out of a laptop before it does on me. I have always used intel so I don't have a clue ref amd.

as above you've got options. Vega 56/64 great with a freesync 1440p 60/144hz monitor for £150-400 .

but wait till the 7th! and be quick on the button . currently ryzen lags behind at 1080p gaming , but if your able to get a higher res monitor, its not so bad. New Ryzen 3*** chips should be equal hopefully at 1080p/1440p gaming :)

x570 monitor will be expensive, unless Gigabyte X comes in at a nice price but have a feeling you'll be good with MSI B450 AC as listed above

Motherboard?

aye, ryzen 3000 will be cheaper then intel for sure but have a feeling our ££ to $$ rate will cause slightly higher price then most, but performance should make up for it.

and then 2600hz ram is about £60 more then 3000hz so starts to add up

x570 boards are more expensive though- no hiding around it - in this case b450 carbon AC would be fine enough
