NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

How has this gone so wrong, it's like an escalation from quite bad to worse from day 1 lol and then the whole 3090 being marketed as a gaming card which is a total lie in itself being the finisher.

I think no matter what I will def be skipping Ampere.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/com...reason_for_crashes_and_instabilities/g6k2dl6/

This post from an electronics engineer and PCB designer on the Reddit thread is a bit more reasoned. It could be the issue but it's not as clear cut as some are making out.

Quite, its speculation at this point. But if true, In layman's terms (because I am):
What we do know is Reference spec. by Nvidia is one array of the little ones and 5 big ones for the 3080, and 2 arrays of the little ones and 4 big ones for the 3090.
The FE 3080 had 2 little 4 big so was over spec, no idea about the FE 3090.

Some credence is given to this theory by the fact at least a couple of manufacturers have changed their models from 6 big ones to a combination of both, or all little.

Regardless if this is the reason or not, anyone ordering one now should ensure it at least meets the Nvidia spec.

Arrogance, hubris, and BAD management decisions from Jensen. Nvidia are so focused on profit and market share, on ruining things for AMD while protecting their 'crown', that they have lost sight of what really matters and allowed their standards, quality assurance and attention to detail slip. If they had not rushed this release and simply waited and prepared so that they had enough stock and a robust ordering system, if they had allowed AIB's to properly prepare for such a big launch, then much of this could have been avoided and their cards would still have sold by the bucketload.

After the highly criticized launch that was Turing, the reputational damage from this even more disastrous one, and the lack of goodwill in the minds of gamers may cause serious repercussions further down the line for Nvidia. All AMD have to do to gain much of that spare goodwill is to launch their cards on time with good performance, a reasonable price, in sufficient quantities and with a secure and transparent ordering system and they will gain a lot of ground this gen both in market and mind share and in positive press coverage

Unfortunately you cannot express this opinion without being seen as anti-nvidia. In the mid 00's I noticed my purchasing habits drifted from having the best, to getting a reasonable card for good value. I also had other hobbies, sports and interests soaking my disposable income up. However I was genuinely interested in this launch when I seen Jensen disclose low pricing with decent performance. I was never going to be a 2pm release 'F5' spammer but turns out it would have been wasted after reading all whats unfolded since.

I agree when you say they have lost sight of what really matters, they are now into workstations/AI/a.n.other projects and the 'gamers' are not seen as the audience it once was I'm afraid.

Sorry but what have i missed in the last day or two? whats wrong with the 3000 series?

So it now appears that a 5 & 1 layout for the 3080 should be fine.

Buildzoild has released a video on it which I've not had a chance to watch yet

There has to be more to this than just the POCAP and MLCC arrangement as i have seen a few MSI Ventus having the crashing issue and that has the 5 & 1 layout.

I personally have ordered the Gigabyte eagle 3090 OC and its coming next week. It has 6 POCAP's but it seems for some reason that gigabyte is less affected. Not sure what to do quite yet!

Watching his video it appears its not just the layout but some AIBs have used cheaper value POCAPs making the situation even worse. He does say he doesn't have the cards to test so this is pure theory and he's hoping someone stabs them with an oscilloscope soon.

Update from EVGA: https://forums.evga.com/Message-about-EVGA-GeForce-RTX-3080-POSCAPs-m3095238.aspx

I'm deffo not buying a card for the moment with this issue floating about, well other than a EVGA one.

After that statement there is clearly know issues out there with this design, but I still feel this up in the air and nothing is fully certain. At least EVGA has made a statement cause Nvidia and the AIBs silence on this is very damning the longer this goes on.

I have to admit I'm kind of glad I didn't get a launch one and certainly wouldn't accept a firmware update that reduces the quality of the product to fix it.

Well Ive just pushed my GIGABYTE card a little on 3dmark time spy..

With a +75mhz offset and no overclocking the memory I seen this card boost to 2130mhz is places and was maintaining well over 2000mhz

The reality is there is not going to be a £650 card. There never was, and now we know that for certain.

The reality is the 3080 is going to cost £750, as look what happens when AIBs desperately try to meet Nvidia's promise of a £650 card. They cut corners and the poor node screws them over.

If Nvidia had been honest about that? fair enough. But they never are. They hype everything, including things that don't need the hype. You know? sometimes you should let your products speak for themselves instead of having to stretch the truth about every aspect in order to make them look better. A good product will speak for itself.

Sometimes I am glad that I have this affliction of never trusting anything or any one. It never lets me down, so at least there is that.

750 still ok for a 3080

Yes, yes ! that's exactly what Jen expects you to do !

If you saw a advert for a TV in the paper for £400 and then got to the store and the rep told you it was actually £500. What would you do?

1. Cuss him out and leave, very angry.
2. Pay it and thank him.

Hint - I bet i's number 1. Yet Jen can do this night and day and people pay it. LOL.

At 4:30 when he says "no, not the 220, they're not stupid enough to use that"

Totally. Where I was underwhelmed by the performance of a 2080ti when I had it in my possession I am thoroughly impressed by the 3080. Even if I had to downclock it a bit the performance would still be mega on a 4k 144hz monitor.

NVIDIA marketing has you.

Lets overcharge massively for the 10 and 20 series and suckers will still pay it.

When we charge £650 which is stupidly expensive for a GPU will seem like a bargain and even have the mindset to pay more..
