No, my device does not have a HDMI 2.1 port so it cannot physically support the bandwidth needed for 4k120, as even 1440p120 requires dropping from 4:4:4 to 4:2:4 chroma subsampling (no HDR).

Edit: It also looks like the Q85 cannot physically support it either.
Chroma sub sampling has nothing to do with HDR. UHD bluray for example is 4:2:0 regardless of HDR10/DV. HDMI 2.0 can do 1440/120 4:4:4 no problem, that’s less bandwidth than 4k60.

Edit: got my sums wrong. But still point stands that HDR works in 4:4:4 4:2:2 or 4:2:0, pretty sure both current gen consoles use 4:2:2 10bit 4k60.

Was thinking logically earlier, I know neither console makes sense at launch as there is bugger all bar old stuff I want to play but, I'd imagine PS is going to be the first out with a hardware revision as they are playing catch-up (its good advertising for xbox with "the most powerful games console in the world") so if I was to keep either of my pre orders it should probably be the X.
What will actually happen is they will both turn up and I'll get them both out and one will be played and the other will be in stasis for a while.
I don't think we will see mid gen refreshes this generation, current gen was a strange one as we were just coming out of a recession and 4k was in its infancy....the consoles weren't a typical generational leap (especially the poor CPU and HDD) and were struggling to hit the 1080p standard from the beginning, then early in their life cycle 4k really started to go mainstream and they where no way near capable of reaching that level so a refresh was needed, next gen consoles have nailed it hardware wise this time I can see them good for 5 years or so, factoring in the current global instability and 8k being a niche market (which would be the only reason for a mid cycle specs boost) I'd be surprised if I seen anything other than slim versions before the leap to next next gen

You don’t get HDR or 4:4:4 in 1440p120 on these TVs.

Not decided to upgrade my tv for the foreseeable as I can’t see 120fps games happening on anything other than massively downgraded visuals/indie games. Looks like 4k60 won’t always be the highest fidelity option compared to a 4k30 option so I’m gonna stick with a 4k60 hdr tv. Tbh though the first party 30fps games have run smoothly enough for me anyway and it doesn’t bother me eg- TLOU2, HZD, Spider-Man, Uncharted 4.

I am hoping for a 4k60 generation. I'm sure there will be the odd game that reaches 4k120 - but I think visuals will be lowered and I want things to look good.
I was recently looking to replace my receiver and was going to grab an HDMI 2.1 model - but for less than half the price I sourced am excellent quality second hand one - it'll limit me to 4k60, but it gives me all the HDR/Dolby Vision etc.

I don't know about the PS5 but on the Series X there are already quite a few non-indie games that support 1440p120 and even 4k120.

Dirt, Halo MCC, Rainbow 6 Siege, CoD, Devil may Cry 5, Gears 5, Doom, and Ori from the top of my head.

For multiplayer and FPS games 120fps is a game changer.

Have to consider they are old/last gen/cross gen games that run 120fps on mid tier GPUs too.

Doubt many games will be aiming for 120fps once the old consoles are dropped, these are not next gen games. Most of them are 1440 120 as you mentioned too not 4k 120, or 1080 120 in the case of DMC 5.

Correct, most of those multiplayer shooting game franchises that were 60fps on the ps4/xbox one will now make the move to 120fps on the ps5/series x. So if someone is stuck on 60hz then they have a clear disadvantage playing against other players with 120hz screen in say call of duty, overwatch, battlefield etc

Does 120hz really make much difference on console?

Wdit: when using controller?

Yes, it’s as big as the difference between 30 and 60 FPS in terms of feel, accuracy, and input lag.

I know this is a Sony thread, but those of you who played halo during the transition from 30 to 60 FPS know how big of a change that was for a competitive FPS.

Mine does has have one higher bandwith port which theoretically can do it but samsung havent got official hdmi 2.1 accreditation for it as yet.

Seeing the compromises to get 120 fps like in Dirt 5 means I won't touch that mode for the time being. Hell most 2020 TV's won't even do 4K 120, HDR and VRR at the same time.

For things like racing games it will, even if it doesn't make you a better player the smoothness should add to the immersion. Also if games use VRR then they won't necessarily just be locked at 30/60fps and so even if a game is advertised at 60fps it could still run at an average 90fps?
