It was offside. Hes in an offside position then moves into his path. Braindead defending.
Agreed. But equally how does this give justification to overrule a goal as a clear an obvious error, but a handball in the buildup that isn’t final phase is deemed ok? I don’t mind which interpretation they use for clear and obvious error, but I don’t understand how a handball in the build up is ok or a clear foul in the buildup more by a 2-3phases allow a goal to stand, but not when someone offside is deemed to blocks a player that would have no impact on the goal scored.

We need to stop relying on set pieces and poor play from apposing sides to get goals. We need a stronger and more impactful midfield to create better opportunities going forward. Gerrard seemed to think the only issue last night was our defensive work which lead to the goal when in reality that's only the first or second goal this season conceded from a header. I'd say pound for pound we have one of the strongest back fours outside of the big 6. Konsa for example is often the hardest working player on the pitch at any given time and disregarding his error last night Mings has been exceptional under Gerrard. Our issue isn't conceding goals, it's scoring them. We need a more concise midfield who can weight passes properly and find a striker who knows when he's being played offside. Honestly, 5 times last night Ings was about 3 or 4 yards offside without having even made a run. Watkins is fantastic and he's such a smart player but it's pointless if we can't thread a ball to him in the danger areas.

My issue with the offsides is that it's impossible to know what frame the ball is actually kicked, the lines are useless and measuring an armpit against a foot from a 2D image is futile.

The ref should look at the monitor and if it's impossible to tell the benefit of the doubt should go to the attacker.

Unless they can get the offsides as accurate as Hawkeye for goal line decisions then it's time to remove the forensic element to it.

This has been gone over loads of times in the past couple of years. Is the current tech perfect? No but it's far more accurate than people think. The camera's are calibrated to factor in the angle and even in the most extreme cases (where you had a forward and defender sprinting in opposite directions) the frame rate will only effect the decision by a handful of cm's but this is now countered by the margin of error that now goes in the attackers favour.

The delay yesterday wasn't because it was difficult to tell whether Ramsey was offside btw. The delay yesterday was because VAR were checking other issues around the goal first. They spent an age trying to determine whether Watkins touched the ball before Ings (meaning Ings would have been offside) before looking at the Ramsey incident. Had they looked straight at the Ramsey offside then it would have been concluded within seconds.

A new, almost instant, system is being trialed as we speak though and if all goes to plan it will be rolled out at the WC and then likely to be used in major Leagues from the 23/24 season:

IMO they should have disallowed the goal straight away. As you say if Watkins touched the ball then Ings was offside. If he didn't touch the ball then it was a foul on De Gea. He went with his studs high, missed the ball and caught opposition player. All that aside we were terrible and Vila deserved more out of the game.
