I was looking to get a 4k monitor for my home office for the work and photo editing real estate (and to play some older games at higher resolutions as a bonus) and while doing a bit of research I noticed the Samsung LU28R55 with the following specs: https://displaysolutions.samsung.com/monitor/detail/1532/U28R55
...then I noticed the price which was REALLY reasonable vs other panels at £285 in my local currency.

Seeing there was stock at my local shopping centre, I ran there, grabbed one and ran back. Got it set up and turned on, tweaked some basic settings and I have to say I am quite impressed. Bear in mind I have done no advanced dialling in of settings, but so far:
  • IPS glow seems no worse than my Dell U2515H, likely better.
  • I have not noticed any major bleed so far and had a quick check in a dark room. Panel seems pretty uniform from my initial inspection, all things considered.
  • Black levels are acceptable, fired up a quick game (Empire at war in a space skirmish battle) and I could see some surprisingly decent detail in the void though obviously nothing stellar (pun unavoidable).
  • Colours seem ok without spending more time tweaking, though I still have work to do here when I find some good calibration guide. I am not expecting miracles at this price range and am buying this to tide me over until OLED.
  • I was able to OC the refresh rate to 75hz straight away... 80hz failed though. I call that a decent result for a budget 4k screen! EDIT - Now down to 65hz as 70-80 gives aetifacts.
  • It is not height adjustable but I knew this. The default height is fine and my head is centred so it's not a problem.
28" seems a REALLY nice size for this resolution, not too big and not too small, and it feels a lot nicer than my 25" Dell U2515H.

I will play around tonight and try some Skyrim for a laugh and watch as my 1660 Super cries. First impressions are decent though, considering I kept my expectations suitably moderate. :)

Looks good, I've got the Dell 2415Q. No complaints from me with it, only thing that dates it is the slightly larger bezels. There aren't many replacement options at 4K for a reasonable price.

Well, it seems my monitor doesn't like refresh rates above 65hz as I started getting speckling at anything of 70hz and above. I crapped my pants when I first saw it as I thought they were dead pixels until I noticed them moving. :D

I tried Skyrim at 4k which was unmodded excet for ini tweaks and it still looked amazing, so I can only imagine what it will look like when I install Wabbajack and get the mods up and running. It will be a slideshow, but a gorgeous one. Witcher 3 with mods ran at 4k at around 30fps or so and looked insanely beautiful. The best thing? It scaled down to 1440p and still looked beautiful and sharp. Gaming seems smooth as hell even if it isn't high refresh and I am not sure if Freesync is working or not, although it is enabled in the monitor settings.

Considering I bought this monitor on the spur of the moment and there weren't many professional reviews, I am really damn impressed with it. Decent blacks (for an IPS), relatively uniform panel (vs my Dell U25) and everything is laser sharp. 28" also really is a great size, a good balance of dpi and practicality for the size and resolution. Add in the gaming chops for the games I play and I am currently a happy camper... I can't wait for Zen3 and Ampere and I feel that with this panel I can switch between 1440p and 4k in gaming pretty easily without sacrificing too much visual quality. :)

Wow, 4k at 24"... that must be sharp to say the least. :D

Nvidia control panel, Set up G-sync / G-sync compatible. Enable for full screen mode and enable for selected display model.

Download the Nvidia G-sync Pendulum demo and if you see G-sync listed in the top left then it's working.

Non G-sync compatible (just freesync) monitors do sometimes work - luck of the draw. Can use ToastyX CRU (custom resolution utility) to get some freesync panels to work that don't by default.

Sadly G-sync doesn't appear in my control panel. :(

EDIT - It's likely because I am not using a DisplayPort cable... I will get one asap! https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1021857-g-sync-compatible-master-thread/

Ok guys, good news... I hooked it up with a DP cable and my Gsync is now working. I just fired up my modded Witcher 3 and holy frickadoo... it looks AMAZING!

I am also seriously impressed how clear this monitor is when running games at 1440p... it has a VERY acceptable sharpness level that brushes away my fears that it would be distractingly blurry running games at non-native res.

I can see me very happily using this screen for both 1440p and 4k gaming until in the future I buy an OLED or MicroLED monitor or find an IPS of this size/quality but with 144hz for a good price.

Considering the quality I think this monitor is a bargain and so far performs brilliantly for both productivity and games. It's really exceeded my expectations. :)

Ordered myself this same display now which i will get on tuesday most likely. Could you test with the gsync test on onvidia's "cool stuff" section and see if there's any tearing?

Tested this monitor with nvidia pendulum, and i had no tearing provided gsync and vsync was turned on in nvidia control panel, only stuttering as pendulum went all over the place with the fps.

I find it decent, but it has a good amount of backlight bleed from around the screen depending on the angle, and works fine with nvidia if you turn on Gsync and fast sync in 3d settings (vsync to fast)

But when connected to my xbox, i did find it oddly annoying that "samsung magic bright" didn't work. I think it's cause the monitor supports 10bit HDR.

Did you guys manage to unlock overdrive settings when using freesync option enabled with this monitor? Idlk to set it to fast but i cant, cause its locked.

Sorry I don't use overdrive and still don't notice any ghosting or lag or anything... but then I don't play twitch-reaction games.

Thanks, I already have that bookmarked, but Red 44 vs Blu 64 seemed way too disbalanced for a supposedly calibrated monitor. It must be the thing with wide gamut. Would you say the monitor is colour accurate with these settings?

Actually I have:

R 48
G 50
B 50
Gamma: Mode 1
Sharpness: 12
Contrast 20
Brightness 0

Brightness and contrast are like that as I hate looking at bright screens.

I purchased it and I think it is great.

The exact model I got is U28R550UQR, if anyone finds this via Google. The monitor was very had to tilt back, one reviewer even thought that it couldn't be tilted. I actually had to look it up and yes it does tilt. Colours out of the box are good. Nice and vivid, with some oversaturation and a little bit of a red-ish tint. The first thing I did was use novideo_srgb program to limit the output to sRGB, which gives a little bit of an underwhelming result as the display looks a bit bland afterwards. Without it, however, skin tones look a bit too red, which gives a "sunburned" / "embarrassed" look. The scaling at 125% works well in Windows 10 at normal viewing distances for me personally. With 150% text is a bit too big. The next thing I did was set up brightness and contrast. I kept the brightness at 95, contrast 74 and sharpness 60. The screen could use a bit more contrast, but with these settings I am content. This may be too bright for some. HDMI black level is default Low, Eye saver Off, Game Mode Off, Response Time Standard. With colours I settled on R 48, G 47, B 54. It took quite a while to find the correct white point, but I compared it to 2 other reasonably accurate screens I had around and will probably stick with this. There is also this Gamma Mode setting, of which I can only recommend Mode 1 as others bring a lot of "blacks crush". In fact, even with such high brightness and contrast I couldn't quite get the band 17 to be visible on RTings brightness calibration test. IIRC this has to do with monitor following the wide gamut gamma. With whites it works well. Response times with the default "Faster" mode is very disappointing. It has a lot of inverse ghosting when scrolling black text on a white background, so I am using "Standard" mode. Fastest is even worse. I haven't gamed on Standard yet, maybe the Faster mode is not too bad in gameplay but for productivity Standard it is. This is fine for me because I have a 144Hz laptop for gaming.
