Anyone else pre-ordered?

Early pre-orders start shipping from 7th April apparently.

For my use case, which is pretty much exclusively sim racing, this seems pretty good. With a free 14 day return policy I thought it would be worth trying.

That's a different headset.

Aye, I think a significant new headset like the Super range warrants its own thread.

I'm really torn about what headset to go for. Been waiting to upgrade for a while and it looks like 2025 is the year to do so for sure.

My current possibles list is the BB2, Pimax Super 50ppd, Pimax Dream Air or possibly the Deckard (though I have nagging doubts about the latter). Really want OLED, but microOLED sounds like it's far too dim with pancake lenses. And Pimax as a brand concerns me.

I have a PSVR2 at the moment and the the OLED panels on that have their shortcomings but for certain games it's superb if you supersample significantly and add reshade sharpening. And brightness is also very very good, about 280nits I believe due to the Fresnel lenses. I think the microOLED headsets are less than half this due to the pancakes. But no one ever seems to release actual nit brightness values, it's very easy to do so it's very annoying.

If the local dimming is good on the Pimax Super then it's a definite contender, but it still won't match OLED by a long shot I imagine. Also I just don't trust any of the Youtube VR reviewers to give an accurate description of stuff like local dimming. They all talk out of their arse about nothing of any value. They have entire channels/ careers dedicated to VR headsets, and they don't explain the simple things that everyone wants to know. Only way is to try it yourself.

I've ordered 1 too, 50 PPD and 130 HFOV were calling out to me, I get a $399 discount because I'm an 8KX owner which tipped me into buying it, all in I think it will cost me about £1100. Pimax state it is the worlds first retina level VR headset, it isn't quite retina level (I think that is 60+ PPD) and Varjo were offering this sort of PPD a good while ago I think. My 8KX is huge and heavy but I got used to the size/weight, for simming it's not that noticeable. Inside out tracking is a bonus too. Hope I don't regret this! At least they allow free returns now so if it's garbage it will go back.

EDIT - pulled trigger on the 50ppd QLED today (before 1st May current offer is you get free delivery, free Dmas earphones, top strap and different face padding).

You can now get it for £728 upfront (with a small discount code, and including tax) then a one off payment of £713. That's c£1440 all in delivered, and including tax, with the dmas earphones etc thrown in. For the specs of this headset, I think that is 'pretty good'.

It was between this and the BSB2 for me (and sort of the MeganeX but the tiny fov and no returns quashed that).
I want OLED really, but I'm figuring I may end up getting the Pimax Super OLED module too in a few months, if the QLED and local dimming are disappointing for dark games.

I think one headset and '2 modules' is a potentially brilliant move for people like myself who play very varied games, don't see a lot of people talking about this aspect. It looks very easy to swap in/ out the module and you've got the super high res, wide fov, BRIGHT option for flight simming/ racing and stuff, then swap in the OLED module for Alyx, Aliens, any 'dark' games that benefit from the OLED qualities we love.

In terms of price and competition you could get a Pimax Super with the 50PPD QLED module, AND the OLED module (I think that will be c£700 delivered + tax) for virtually the same price as the MeganeX with Controllers and just one base station costs added, which I would have to do. That's pretty mental.

Size and weight does irk me, but I'm thoroughly a sit down VR gamer, even for non-sim stuff, so it's not really an issue for me. And yes, 14 day trial with free returns is amazing really and you can't argue with that. If it's ****, back it goes, have a rethink, then probably get BSB2 instead!

Yeh I forgot to mention the inclusion of the DMAS headphones etc thrown in if ordered before May 1st, and a great point too about the swappable optics, could be a great feature for later upgrading to OLED.

I love the look and form factor of the BSB2 but for me visual display, namely resolution and fov, are my priorities. The size/weight of the Super would be a problem if using it for games where there's significant movement but I want one just for simming (although I'll probably try Alyx, Fallout 4, etc, too). For playing games with movement I will always want wireless capability anyway and my Q3 is perfect for that (and MR).

It's worth keeping in mind though that this is Pimax so some bumps along the way may well happen, fingers crossed everything turns out well for everyone.

I also have pre ordered the crystal super. After buying the crystal light last year and having a somewhat bumpy start with it ( pimax support was really good imo ), it turned out to be a really good headset in the end so im somewhat optimistic about the super, i am just not expecting it to be all that it can be on day one out of the box. its a pimax !

That's a good sign that you liked your Crystal. I liked my Pimax 8KX, they can make some very enjoyable tech with class leading specs, but their QC/QA and support is sometimes hit or miss.

I think (hope) they are learning, for example they used to charge for returns but they are now free within 14 days, they now also extend the warranty if someone reports an issue close to when their warranty expires, they extend the warranty until the issue is sorted because in the past they were accused of trying to draw out issues until the users warranty ran out. The claimed specs on the Super seem to be unusually close to what Pimax claim i.e. horizontal FOV has been measured to be fairly close to what they say instead of being way less which was sometimes the case in the past.

Was it using that numpty mrtv code?

Heha. No!!! I purposefully didn't use any of the numpty VR youtuber codes as I don't want them to get a penny. There's a generic one that I got just from the site itself, same amount. Not much (about £25 or something) but better than a kick in the balls....

EDIT - this one

Yeah I don't want to give him any credits, what's the rules on sharing codes like that

No idea, it was on Pimax's own website as a promo when I bought it so if some 'mod' has an issue with that, I don't really give a toss....
