*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I've always found skins a little odd in this game. I mean I don't think I ever actually look at the ship in any other camera view except the default one.
Then again, I suppose some people like to take screenshots and stuff and cosmetics are generally harmless.

No harm in them at all, quite nice to see them from an on foot perspective and they are the right way of doing microtransactions for certain, not that they are quite so micro any more.

Not played this in years and thinking of jumping back in. Is it worth getting one of the prebuilt ships? Was looking at the Python Mk2 Stellar.
Up to you, it'll save you time and effort in engineering and give you a ship you can replace at zero cost but my attitude has always been that if I can earn it in game why would I spend real money on it, it's all playing the game and I'd rather spend my money on things I can't earn in game, or would be if I was ever going to give FD any of my money again :D

I would say don't buy any ship you can get in game. if you really want to buy a ship with cash get a Caspian as that will likely give you the best value for your money.
money is so easy to get on the game. for a start quickly sign up to a power in power play and do the community goal. you only have to earn a few merits and you will be awarded millions (a few hrs at it will earn you over 100 million)

a good 1st ship which offers a huge amount of bang per buck in terms of in game credits would be a cobra mk v. they are cheap and massively over powered compared to other small ships.

the python mk2 is a proper end game combat ship. personally I would not go straight. to one of those. elite really is a game about the journey not the destination.

Oh that's an easy one. My time is more valuable and the most precious finite thing we have.
If I know I really want to go exploring, but I don't find the game loops fun to get to position where I can do it in good time then I'm quite happy to spend money because I have far more of that than I do time.

You don't need anything fancy to go exploring with, you could quite happily go out in a sidewinder with a few modules added, that said, if you want exploration then the Caspian or Mandalay would be a far better option over a Python MkII and darn it, just realized you didn't ask the question and I'm cross replying now lol :D

:D Yeah I just mean generally, I've not actually done it, if you recall I purchased the Mandalay, zipped around a bit but then felt I cheated so parked it and started again lol. I was just trying to add some reasoning behind the pay/play decisions I guess.
That said, I think the only time I've ever done it was actually last month, I paid £3.99 to unlock all the weapons on RE8 (after I finished it initially) because I thought I'd fancy another run through but only if I could make it easy for myself.

Just suffered my most annoying death yet :-(

I'm a System Architect and I was building an orbital miltary outpost to increase system security. I'm also maxed out on reputation with the local faction sp an ally. I've just delivered the penultimate load for the outpost when as I autolaunch I slip and hit the throttle whlst doing something else. MY Panther Clipper gets stuck on something, don't know what and for the next 30+ seconds no matter what I can't get the bugger off. Reverse, forward, up, down side to side, roll, boost you name it I try it. Then I get a 100cr fine then some seconds later a bounty and the station guns kill me in a shielded Panther in about 2 seconds if that. Boom.

I know it's automated but gosh it feels harsh to be killed because of a collision detection issue at the station I'm building when I couldn't possibly be in higher standing with the local faction. Oh and they sent me to jail after blowing me up.....grumble.

Grumble, grumble.

Finished the damn thing now...grumble, grumble.

I think next time I'll just try and log out, even with the 15 second delay I should be ok.

My worst was similar. I'm in a Mk2 Clipper, going unshielded as my Carrier is in system. Last load of steel before returning to the building site. Clobbered by a noob hammer on the station I'm leaving. As I was already a little down on %'age it was game over space cadet.

Nice to see the new Station plasma weapons are really really efficient at removing scum and villainy from the galaxy :)

Menu logging is acceptable in situations like that. I got my brand new PC stuck trying to fly out of the station and menu logged to save it. I think I hadn't raised the gear before trying to fit through the slot. I haven't got stuck since but it is a close fit.

Been a bit busy, but finally been able to spend some time in the game.

So to max the money I make exploring.
When I jump to a system, I should do a big scan then FSS scan.
After that, do a surface scan of all the planets. If I see any biologitical reading, I should land on the surface and scan for life.
Is that correct?

I'm on my 1st planet at the moment.
I've found and scanned 3 different items.

The planet says there is 4.
Any tips on how to find the last 1?

Also, is there anyway to get the SRV to scan for organics, rather then keep jumping out on foot?

In ED you "Honk" the system :) Then as you say, FSS scan everything. Its up to you whether to DSSscan everything. Teraformable HMC/Rocky worlds, (teraformable) water worlds, ELW and AW are all worth the effort. Mapping Ice planets is not worth it usually if all you care about is credits. Doing the exo is a very good earner except for bacterium's and some of the Funigidora (sp) which hide in mountains and are a beeping pain to find

not sure what you are asking here, but I can see 4 planets and a moon of the fifth

nope :(
And the hand scanner only does 1 bio at a time

I can recommend srv survey to help with exo bio and exploration

I've been working on my system on and off for a month or two and have fourteen surface facilities and a few orbital installations a Primarary Coriolis and and Military Outpost. And so far it has been the kind of thing I build whilst I'm doing something elese reading, watching YouTube etc. But now I've done something silly I've committed to an Orbis Apollo 209k units to transport. What a fool. I reckon that is more than all my other facilities built to date. So this is probably going to be my fall back job for weeks if not longer. I can't really afford to pay for players to load my FC because even at 10k per tonne that's 2 Billion credits which would be 60% of my free cash. The question will be how much I can direct run in the Panther and how much I need to load the FC with. It's the transitions that can kill you for time, a good Coriolis is a short hop to the FC in FSD but the land and launch is killer.

I went through the effort of configuring controls again and haven't actually played the game. I'm still parked wherever I was for that community event with more credits than I've ever had wondering what I'll even do.
