My brother in law had just had a cell replacement on his 330e, the car is back to how it was, including a few other jobs it was around a grand, at BMW, arguably could have got it done a fair bit cheaper had he shopped around...You can find used engines or gear boxes dirt cheap for most old cars, unless it's something high performance or exotic. Most places will be able to fit it. I run an old Toyota as a daily, costs nothing except fuel and brakes/tyres etc. I'd never save money in the long run using an EV and it's much more hasstle to live with.
If you need to replace batteries, there is no point buying used ones and most places will NOT be able to fit them. The cost never gets cheaper.
You say just replace the cells. Yea right, look how dfficult that is on e.g. a Tesla.
It's a company car so he wasn't bothered - as he wasn't paying - it wasn't the end of the world financially though, even at stealer prices.
