YouTube Premium

Logged in on the TV and then scanned the QR code and it gave a me a price of £12.99 so I just signed up using that lol, cba with all the hassle nowadays, guess Google won

so with premium do you get a lot more 1080 material served up rather than 720 ?
recently got a new laptop and at least for both youtube(Ublocko) and skygo those produce a better quality picture on the panasonic/4k tv if you let it do the upscaling,
and tell the laptop that the external/hdmi tv is only 720,
maybe native youtube app on the tv would produce a better picture, albeit with adds.

(I need to survey some of the content I see regularly with get-yt , and see if they have 1080 streams available for premium users, even though they don't have 4K)

99% of everything I watch is 4K.

I've been just using Opera on android (I'm aware I should look in to other browsers as there's China data concerns) and it's great. Some fun and games with playing shorts (thank god, actually) but apart from that it's good. Background play works fine, and I'm sure I've managed to accidentally get PIP to work at some point, but I can't repeat it.

Just popped in to say YT are really taking the pee with the ads lately.. casting Mickey Mouse to the TV and a 15 minute long Wickes ad comes on.. 15 bloody minutes! Between that and random low quality ads of people filming the front of their tyre fitting business, the targeting is way off.

Edit: sorry, it was over 27 minutes long, not 15, thats just where I caught it.

So in relation to the thread, YT premium isn’t far off for me :o

That can’t be right. Surely? Is it the same ad looping? That has to be a glitch with casting. If not that’s insane.

I used to do the vpn and App Store trick, but as others noted just kept feeling like whack a mole. The family sub with others in this thread has been faultless over the past couple of years. Saves the hassle and it is only £3 or thereabouts. Ad free on my Apple TV / iPhone and YouTube music. Bargain.

Oh it'll be skippable, but I've had Ads that have lasted 30-35 minutes before. basically a whole TV show almost as an advert.

Oh dear, like those crappy Matalan ads on tv where they say to watch the full thing go to their website etc. that’s horrendous and absolute ****take

Aye, sorry, you can skip them and it does indicate that the ads are over 90 seconds long but either way, half an hour.. It’s too much. A quick ad or two has never bothered me before and they always seemed semi-relevant.

I think we are at a point where we need some regulation to give other services access to all the YouTube content so that users aren’t forced to use YouTube to access the content they want to watch. That way YouTube will have to compete with other services and give users a better deal.

How do you think you will get a better deal from someone else?

They would have to pay google for the access to the content and then have their own overhead on top of that and re-produce the youtube front end and stick a new label on it.

Other services wouldn’t need to pay for the content, google would have to give it away.

You’re high if you think that would ever happen. It’s basically state sanctioned theft.

Don’t forget between 50% and 70% of the revenue (depending on how it is generated) goes to the content creator and not to Google.
