Spec me a sound bar

Wireless subwoofer is a bad idea. Sure if it's one choice but I'd ensure the soundbar has standard pre out so if the sub blows up you can use any standard active subwoofer. Or if you find it's not capable enough you can change or add a second

A couple of the sennheiser ambeos have pre outs the max definitely has it and I think the one below that. but not the mini

When am I going to do that?

Has anyone here actually used the 990F? I’ve not heard it, only some of the older Samsung units but I thought they were good.

I have the 990F and it sounds fantastic the sub is a huge improvement over the D variant speakers seem different in the bar too tighter sounding. I found the 990D quite loose sounding more whoomp than thump.
Considering it cost me £350 after cash back I doubt it could be beaten for sound quality and value even by Mr Hornetwhatsit. It even sounds pretty good for music although I use my Denon DM41 for that.

The subwoofer is tiny but Samsung have worked some voodoo magic adding a pair of subs that move together and produce huge amounts of bass. It’s far more than I would ever want and have to turn it down a considerable amount.
The F also produces mid bass from the bar itself this time and it helps with the sound.
I have had it a while now and can highly recommend it especially if they do another deal with cash back.

Thanks, that’s brilliant and matches up with what I’ve read.

I am hoping a new deal comes on soon. What do you think is a good price to aim for?

Things will drop with the sales plus CES is on next week when all the new stuff is announced. LG sound suite is the next new thing with Dolby flex connect and allows front speakers and rear speakers alongside the soundbar.

I am not sure I really understood the point of this development.

Is this so you can have front channels with the soundbar as the centre? What’s the point in that?

Just buy that soundbar then..

But it was a serious question. I live in a flat, I have a partner, I don’t want to run wires, I just want to have better audio from my TV and have a bit of surround sound.

I said all this, you are the one that decided to start bashing me over the head.

I really suggest you consider how you post in future.

Soundbars are heavily middle sounding, you don't get that nice separation by having the speakers nice and wide and then it relies heavily on 3d effects to try simulate it which isn't always the best. It comes down to room shape, size etc but the market is definitely there. The Sony bravia quads (and the original HT-A9) sold very very well, it's the system that I own and it is definitely better than a soundbar. The same reason all the Sonos users have been asking to be able to use the Era 300's as front left and right speakers alongside the bar (which can be achieved with a third party application currently).

You don't obviously have the take the full LG system, they've designed it so you could just have the soundbar on its own. You could just have 2 speakers, 4 speakers, 2 speakers 1 sub, or the full blown suite etc. However, being the first company to do it, will definitely push others in the direction now and I expect it will sell very well to those who don't want to run speaker cables.

But the Samsung system I discussed already does this? They have wireless rears and a wireless sub, not sure I understand.

In any case, even if I had separates in my new flat I’d not be able to get them any wider than a soundbar as there’s a wall in the way. I suspect this is the case for many so that’s what these manufacturers have figured out.

Yeah, this is front left and front right speakers alongside the soundbar. It's basically for people who want more / have bigger rooms / want better separation.

The Samsung will be more than enough for your room. If you couldn't fit rear speakers in then I would have suggested the Sennheiser Ambeo max or plus.

I can get rears in. I was going to skip it until I realised they don’t have wires running to them from the bar anymore.

Have you heard the Samsung yourself?

Nope, they still need power though. JBL offers wireless rears that don't need power and can be recharged by plugging them back into the soundbar just as an FYI.

I used to own the Q990D in my old house. It's a very good device and goes plenty loud if you need to push it (would deafen you on max :D). Sound quality and effects are really good and you can usually find them at a steal as well every now and again.

Power isn’t an issue as luckily where they’d go I already have two plugs! It’s running the wires to the front that would look terrible.

How did you find the dialog on the Q990D?

Do what most do and just ignore him, he's just attention seeking as usual.

As Simmz has said, there's plenty of adjustment via the Samsung SmartThings app..

I've got the Q930F and the dialouge is superb, which is one of the reasons why I got it (my old LG was just dreadful).
I paid £480 and couldn't be happier with it.

Thanks mate. Just frustrated to feel stupid for looking at a soundbar I guess.

There's no reason to feel stupid, it's a perfectly valid avenue and you're looking at exactly the right products for a good experience.

The 930-990's will do you well, I've had some experience with AVR's and am currently planning an ATMOS cinema room using Wharfedale Evo 4's. I can confidently say that I'd still be very happy to have one of those soundbars for a living room/standard family TV set up. It's miles ahead of your TV, you get some nice surround features and good audio separation for movies/games and a nice leap in raw audio quality.

As mentioned earlier, for £400-500 it's impossible to beat and you hit diminishing returns pretty hard these days.

I do have issues with "cheap" soundbars for a number of reasons, if space isn't so much of an issue a 2.0 bookshelf setup using a mini-amp can be done second hand for under £100 and it'll sound far better than any almost anything under £300-350. I've put together that sort of thing before for friends looking to improve their audio, a lot of the time a cheap 2 channel soundbar with or without a wireless sub will barely sound any better than TV speakers. There's some argument for entry level 3 channel soundbars as you get the centre channel for vocals, but the budget stuff most look at are still worse than a 2.0 bookshelf running on a £15-30 amp using the 3.5mm jack from the TV and I'll die on that hill.

Keep hunting for sales on the 930-990's, they're brilliant products that don't ruin the look of a room while greatly enhancing the tv experience. Don't let self proclaimed cinema elitists that apparently don't understand how HDR works put you off. :p

The other thread was no different, some guy needed a basic 2.0 setup with a potential future 2.1 setup and you harped on about getting an AVR for a bunch of features totally irrelevant to a basic setup. Your advice could even cost people asking for that sort of information more in the long term, you're addicted to chatting about higher end AVR related stuff based upon what addicts/AV enthusiasts in AVR specific websites think is good and even then you skew the data. It's almost like you're wondering if you spent too much on your own system, and the only reason anyone believes you spent as much as you did is because you apparently were forced into posting pictures at some point.

Just stop. You're capable of offering good advice but you go on weird unrelated tangents, there's more to life. It's Christmas, be happy, stop nuking every single home theatre thread with the same needlessly extreme and complex advice. The only reason you aren't called out more is because the one known genuine industry expert/person that did it regularly quit posting here, although thankfully he's still alive and well.

You're not helping people with information overload and unrelated advice, however much you might think you are. Nobody cares about your speaker/sub setup as it's never, ever presented as a relative comparison to actually help someone.

I was thinking of posting in that thread you mentioned yesterday saying pretty much what you've just said here but decided to have another mince pie instead.

I'm not sure what drives him to often try to make out that only emulating his system or setup is the best way for them. i.e. it's so cheap and simple to run wires everywhere.

I normally dread to see someone ask an audio related question as he'll normally be one of the first to reply and it's a toss up if he'll just simply answer the question or make out he's knows their situation better than them and try to get them then to emulate his setup in some way.

I'm now out of mince pies, hence this reply. ;)
