What retro things have you done today?

Interesting issue I’ve come across lately just wondering if anyone else has. I have a couple of 9800 pro’s which refuse to be powered by a modern PSU. At first I thought maybe it was a 5v rail issue. The startup but have a blocky output very similar to when a card has a memory issue.

Tried with a superflower 1300w and a Corsair hx1000 neither work but a 400w older ac bel does!

What is everyone's retro space like these days? I've not had one for a year or so now but I've suddenly realized (and measured) that this corner could be a perfect retro hidey hole. I can get a 60cm wide bookshelf (sideways like the current massive IKEA thing) + 50cm deep desk without fouling the radiator. There is 110cm total width so I can get a 105cm wide/long desk.
How deep are 15" CRTs will one fit on a 50cm desk?

my 9yo has requested a Snes for his upcoming birthday. Happily they seem quite affordable and easy to get, any pitfalls i should look out for?

You could always get a SNES mini! Looks like a SNES, plugs straight into HDMI and lots of inbuilt legal games would be perfect for a 9 year old

Or if dead set on a real SNES, make sure it has no yellowing and the controllers are good ( no damaged wires ).. Maybe a Scart RGB kit too? :)

hes dead set on original hardware, we are on the lookout for a crt at a reasonable price too, he has a ps1/2, a megadrive and a wii, hes super keen on all things retro and already has a complete gameboy collection. Ill look into this rgb scart thing, appreciate the tips to look out for regarding degraded shells.

Good luck lol
CRT TVs are usually very cheap or free on FB Marketplace.

Even ultra high end ones are usually very cheap. I was tempted by a Bang and Olufsen widescreen with stand for £80 the other week, but I decided I'd have nowhere to put it. :p

PC monitors are another story, people love to try and overcharge for them but you sometimes get lucky.

my CRT was on a 60cm deep desk and it did feel like I was too close to it, but that could just be because we are used to having the flat screens so far back for all of these years.

Popped into Leicester and bought a 'The Spectrum', even though I have also ordered a hoglet67 powered RGBtoHDMI adaptor for the Spectrum +2a

I'm looking forward to comparing them, and I'm not loving the keys on 'the spectrum'. I miss my chunky hard 128k keys :-D

I was tempted to pick up "The Spectrum" to complement my trusty Speccy +2 . The only thing that stopped me was the rubber keys, i've got zero nostalgia for that model so would it be a wasted purchase, if it was based off the plus revision though i'd have picked it up as I used to use my uncles a a lot for Daley Thompson Decathlon and I think Finders Keepers (?)

I look forward to hearing what you make of it :)

certainly not in london!

I know it's not strictly retro but I had one of these new Retro Games Limited Quickshot II's arrive today (was a pre-order, but delayed somehow). I used to own a few Quickshots back in the day on the Amiga, but it's been a long time since I've picked an original one up. This feels quite lightweight. The stick sounds like it is micro-switched. In Windows it is recognised as 10-button controller although only 8-buttons on the controller. I will try out on the MiSTer at some point, but that needs some maintenance to bring it back up-to date.

It probably does a representation of the original sticks although I'm not sure I'll use this a huge amount, but interesting to see these to come back. If I do get the new RGL Amiga in June this probably will be fun to pair with that.

I had forgotten I'd pre-ordered this too, it was only when they updated the delivery date that I realised.

I decided to cancel though as although I thought it would be fun for a quick blast it would just end up gathering dust.

Yea, I think that's understandable. Compared to the Competition Pro it's just not something I'll use a lot. That said I do actually need to use it in anger. Keep procrastinating with regards to updating the MiSTer.

I took delivery of a *brand new* Hercules 3D Prophet Kyro 2 yesterday. Very excited to get it into my Win98 build paired with the Duron 800 to bring the system to be exactly as I had back in 2001.

It almost feels wrong using a 25 year old card when it's still brand new. But what else am I gonna do with it? Leave it in the box for another 25 years? Lol.

Pulled out a box of old pc parts in the loft, found a boxed 4790k loved that chip back in the day, I bet I couldn't even give it away now. Crazy how quick things change:confused:

I still have my 2700K, I used that chip and a 2500K for over a decade!
