Steam Frame (Valve Index 2)

Quest 3 is better for me for sure because I am in passthrough so much so the Frame was a non-starter for me anyway.

How hard or expensive would it have been to just add a simple colour camera, even if it had none of the usual mixed reality stuff like dynamic occlusion etc, a standalone device, which by its very nature can be used almost anywhere, needs decent passthrough imo so the surroundings can be adequately seen. I appreciate i've voiced this before but I still can't get my head around Valve not including decent passthrough in 2026 on a standalone device.

Maybe there's a lot more to it that I don't understand.
So I think what they are trying to do is set a new open standard in the hope others will come after with more options like uoled, MR, higher resolutions etc... Not unlike how SteamVR and Index evolved and even today you have the likes of the MeganeX native SteamVR not to mention all the lighthouse tracked headsets still very much using the Steam tech

In your case a device like Play For Dream demo'd at CES using Steam's standards is probably where you'll want to look.

The panels are really what lets the frame down for me. I'm not too fussed about passthrough.

it's the overall experience that counts, and there tends to be a lot of jank with these newer higher resolution headsets. There's something to be said for a decent VR headset that isn't necessarily top spec but which just works - like the Index did.

Well that's my hope!

That's my Q3 experience in a nutshell.. so thanks for re-confiming I made the right choice ;)

To be honest I've had few issues with the Q3, but I hate the battery being in the headset and weighing it down, and of course that making it very difficult to replace.

There's a lot to be said for headsets with easily replaceable batteries.

If you use a computer and the internet, that ship has sailed a looooooong time ago..
completely, its just the company you sell it to most people now want to consider.

i did some testing with an LLM and some user profile analysis and felt it had a good grasp of people. imagine what Palanir is doing.

Yeah not going to disagree here, the balance of pretty much all headsets is wrong..

Although given it's a standalone headset, I doubt the frame will be any different..

Palantir and their ilk are a scourge on modern society, and i'd include all social media in that scourge.. people are too easily controlled once you know how they lean.. but that's a conversation for another time..

The Frame has the battery in the headstrap. Apparently it's superbly balanced and comfortable and light.

Interesting.. so the strap is not replaceable? bold move..

No it's completely modular and replacable. Have you watched any of the videos? The actual Frame compute/lens unit is absolutely tiny and can be detached from the rest of the components. We're talking near Bigscreen Beyond size.

No i've not watched any videos of something I have no interest in.. I get all my VR news from you @Ravenger ;)

So if I want to replace the strap I have to throw away the original battery? and purchase a new one? or is the battery supposed to be movable between the original strap and third party ones??

No idea there, as they've only shown the default strap so far.

Fair enough, I guess if they pioneer the replacable strap with battery, then it might start a better trend.. with batteries away from the lens/compute headset front..

Still not interested in paying over the odds for a headset, that given the specs as reported on here, is not worthy of a 2026 release..

Hopefully it's as good as you all hope, at a price point that isn't stupid.. and it will push the market forward..

this give a bit of context.

i thought there was a better video but cant quickly find it. for interest only. it doesnt go much in to strap details. but they already said there were other accessories they were working on
