Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month

The main thing for us as a gaming community is that we can use it for everything. If we're doing crossplay on PC / consoles, it works. If we're having a night of cards against humanity, it works. If we need to announce a night of D&D, it works. It's brilliant and nothing else has come close.

Maybe the others have evolved since I last used them, the last time I used Ventrilo or Teamspeak was when I was raiding in WotLK.
Yes they have evolved and nothing ever stays on top.

If it wasn't for roblox buying guilded, that app would have been the one to use instead of discord

Is it though? I can't stand the interface/layout UX whatever you wanna call it, discord really irritates me, I have an account, but I don't use it unless I have to. I hate it.
Yes.

Have you looked at the alternatives recently? Teamspeak has had a bit of a facelift but its fundamentally the same.

One of the reasons why Discord became dominant is that it is operating much more like a social network app. Discord has a global account, individual friends lists, DM's, public server lists, discoverability etc. Whereas Teamspeak is just a place where silo's stick in silo's.

Guilded had all those plus more

Never heard of it, just looked it up and I get your point but the app no longer exists which just adds to my point.

it’s now effectively a part of Roblox and was shutdown to push people into Roblox.

I can see why people wouldn’t want to use Roblox communities outside of Roblox.

Yea. Before then. It was quite popular. Had everything discord had and if it was still around and wasn't owned by roblox, many would have flocked to it after the news from discord

Ask yourself my everyone now uses discord and not team speak, mumble, ventrilo and any of the others I’ve forgotten. The answer is because it’s better and specifically independent of games.

I thought it was because you didn't need to set up your own server? That's certainly the reason me and my friend group moved to Discord.

Fortunately I now have my own Proxmox server and it will be trivial to create a new VM to run whichever chat program we want if this starts to become a problem.

Correct, ‘better’ was very much a catch all for it being easier because it’s all centralised, all the hard work is done for you and it’s ‘free’ at the point of use.

‘back in the day’ someone has to shell out a few bucks a month for the ventrilo or team speak server. The more users you had, the more it cost.

The likes of discord made private voice comms servers very accessible for the masses, not just the nerds.

I'm not too bothered by all this but my gaming mates probably will be. Problem is we're scattered across Windows, Linux and PS5...I can't think of any alternatives that would work on all three.

So my discord has been disabled as i may have joking posted that i was 12 in a server i'm very well known in.....dont know if discord did it or someone reported it? But i had an email outlining the process to get the account unlocked but it doesnt work!

Hello,
Discord is focused on maintaining a safe and secure environment for our community. We’ve found your account to be in violation of our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines. As a result, we’ve disabled your account for the following reason:
You've indicated that you're under the age of 13 or the minimum age of digital consent in your country. You can review the minimum age to use Discord in your country here: https://dis.gd/age-gate
We're required to strictly enforce our age limit for legal reasons, and as such, we'll need to confirm your age if you intend to appeal.
To verify your age, please take a photo of yourself (a selfie) holding BOTH of the following:
1) a photo ID that contains your date of birth
2) a piece of paper that shows your Discord username (including last 4 digits following your username)
All of this information needs to be visible in ONE photo.
Once you've taken the photo, submit a request here: https://dis.gd/request and select "Update my age information on Discord."
Sincerely,
Discord Trust and Safety

after doing this i get an auto response to the ticket by the discord bot and it closes the ticket automatically. Theres no age verification window or anything and trying to log in just tells me my account is locked and to follow the steps in the email...anyone else experience this ?

Someone will have reported it. If you even joke about being under 13, you will get bonked, it's an autoban, no context is taken at all.

The manual verification that you have to go through now is where all the ids were leaked from, I would just make a new account.

Think 'delay' is the key word here. They are finding themselves in a bit of a terrible middle ground where they want to be attractive to future IPO investors and not alienate their userbase which defines their IPO value but at the same time IPO investors want things the userbase hates

I've been using Discord since 2015 and did the Face ID check thing when the whole Online Safety act came out. I didn't worry too much as I didn't need to pass on any government (or other) ID.

It's too late people have already started to look elsewhere. They were dominant, almost monopoly like in the space but they've given the userbase that maybe cares about this stuff an excuse to have look at the alternative. Can't put a lid back on that. Won't harm them much though, tis but a scratch.
