Devolution killed/is killing the concept of Britain and Britishness, so this entire thread is a moo point really, esp. considering the SNP are going to have a referendum on independence soon.

You just need to look like one, right? Wasn't it you who said that after a generation or so, any white immigrant would be able to legitimately call themselves British, but that one drop of non-white blood would effectively preclude them or their descendants from doing likewise?
I dunno mate, you seem good at putting words in my mouth though and speaking for me ;)

In my view devolution isn't what is 'causing' it, it is simply a result of it. I don't blame them. I would love to see an independent England just like they want independent Scotland and Wales.

Unfortunately the SNP cannot hold a referendum as they don't have enough seats for a the majority required to push the white paper through :(

Presumably Westminster would just ignore the result of any such referendum though, anyway?

I class myself as English, and im also a Muslim, i dont define myself as a certain percentage of anything.

I have no problems in fitting, whether that going to the pub and socialising without drinking, or only having egg and cheese melt on a friday instead of bacon and egg, I couldnt give a rats ass whether someone here would accept me as English or not.I even follow the national, infact i have been to several tournament with the supporters club

On the other hand i have been also called a Bounty several times by asians, again i dont care, i love this country and what it has done for me and my family, im very greatfull infact.

I dont think anyone has cause for complaint in this country, the opportunities are there for all if they want to work hard.

I think asians still have many hang-ups however, until they get rid of the bloody enclaves in the north and south and actually bother to integrate, they wont find out that this country and its natives (well most of em) are actually a pretty great bunch. Its down to some natives to stop continually villifying us, yes have some things to answer for, but bloody hell we aint all the sodding same.

For ex someone posted up a pic of monty panesar a while back, and wasnt happy that this bloke was playing for his country ie giving his all for his country, and then these are the same people which want us to 'feel' part of this nation.......

Pretty much exactly how I feel too.

Who are 'they'?

I hardly know anyone up here in Scotland who really wants Independance. I know a few people who can see some benefits, but they also see benefits in being part of the UK.

Assuming you mean only if all Asians felt that way?

How about we look at the other side of the coin? However hard Asians try to fit into society people like DD will always try to find a way to make them an outcast of society.

In reality it's people like DD who should change their views. Then, maybe both parties can get along.

If England were playing cricket against your home nation, eg. Pakistan or India, who would you support... would be a better question. In a lot of cases the answer would not be England. Aka Norman Tebbit's cricket test.

But the test is entirely arbitrary, in the sad event that I'm forced to watch cricket I would pick the team that plays the 'best' cricket although for my money the concept of cricket ever being good* is as alien to me as the idea that the earth is flat. ;)

If you want to pick football then I could say I support Scotland first and foremost but I'm quite used to switching my allegience easily as soon as Scotland go out or in the common event of them not making it there in the first place. Britishness is a very nebulous concept that inherently means different things to different people.:)

*incidentally golf is entirely the same in my view, I appreciate there is some skill involved but I have no interest in it.

'They' as in the black people, of course. ;) No, jokes aside, 'they' as in the respective people of those countries. I love it when people say to me 'oh no one really wants to see the break up of the UK', I mean really, how can anyone tell me that with a straight face when the Scottish first minister is the leader of the SNP whose manifesto is Scottish independence? They must think we're a bunch of thickos to believe that. I would say the people who make that claim though are people who are for the Union, so they are probably a little bit in denial about the situation. I would also say that most Scottish who are for the Union tend not even to consider themselves British either. They are just happy with the POLITICAL arrangement of the Union, as opposed to it actually being some kind of identity.

Absolutely, this is something i have seen far too often in my short 30 years on this earth, for some its never enough, and never will be :(

That said more of the onus is on 'us' as we are the 'alien' party, maybe we need to open the doors to our Mosques,Gurdwara's,Synagogues, even our homes to show people, hey we aint so different, i know when i was growing up, my white friends were shocked when they came to our house, as they expected summat totally different.
