Large capacity DIMM recommendation for Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero

Thanks for the confirmation on the 16x4 kit. I'm currently just running with just 2x8GB 8-Pack DIMMs, which work great. Didn't see the point in using the other two, as I know they will be going back. With regards to the 64GB configuration, then I wanted to have just two DIMMs, so that I have...

Large capacity DIMM recommendation for Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero

In these current times, I simply can't afford to go threadripper. The 3950X offers me the best compromise between cores and cost. I doubt I'll ever need more than 128GB during the lifetime of the system I've just built. If I do, hopefully the economic situation will have improved, so building...

    16 or 32GB Modules >3600Mhz - Any point?

Thanks for getting back to me, Rich. Thanks also to everyone else for their replies. Looks like I'm going to have to go with the Corsair RAM, as I really want a 2x32GB kit in order to have further expandability. I've done some more searching for alternatives, but nobody appears to have any stock.

    DRAM Memory type help?

The more I research this, the more I'm realising that. Even the 8-Pack DIMMs that I've currently got have a reported frequency of 2400MHz in the SPD. They just happen to overclock easily to 3600MHz, and likely beyond.

Large capacity DIMM recommendation for Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero

Turns out that the Vengeance LPX and Vengeance RGB Pro are both using a new Hynix CMR die. Things like Ryzen DRAM calculator haven't been updated to include it yet. There's some reasonable info on it here: https://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192599 and here (in German, so you'll...

    DRAM Memory type help?

Been doing some research into this myself, as I'm waiting on these same DIMMs at the moment. Turns out this is a brand new die from Hynix. It's actually CMR. Things like Ryzen DRAM calculator haven't been updated to include it yet. There's some reasonable info on it here...

Large capacity DIMM recommendation for Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero

Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated. I've tried looking at the list of ECC memory, but the speed in 32GB DIMMs seems to be limited to 2666MHz. I'm guessing they might overclock to 3200MHz, but 3600MHz might be a stretch? The prices on eBay don't seem to be any cheaper than going with...

    16 or 32GB Modules >3600Mhz - Any point?

Hi Rich, Did you ever find something suitable at CL16? I'm in the same boat. Currently, building a Ryzen 3950X system and need at least 64GB. The new Crucial Ballistix range look great, and are reasonably priced but no stock anywhere. Have ordered the Vengeance LPX 2x32GB kit, but am...

Large capacity DIMM recommendation for Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero

Hi All, I'm just in the process of building a new system based on the Ryzen 3950X and Crosshair VIII Hero. It's going to be used for a variety of tasks, including gaming, rendering and virtualisation. I initially ordered the 32GB (4x8GB) 3600Mhz 8Pack Xtreem CL16-16-16-36 kit. This seemed...

In lockdown, so building a new PC

I had no idea the Celsius+ models were coming out, but I figured something was up as I managed to pick up the S36 for £79. At that price, I'm not too bothered that it's now EOL. I'm pretty sure that when it's combined with the Noctua fans, it will perform around as well as the new versions. I...

In lockdown, so building a new PC

The bits have finally arrived. Some delays due to the current situation, but I can now start building. :D

In lockdown, so building a new PC

It was all about budget on the SSDs for now. I already had the 960 Evo's lying around, so figured I may as well use them. I've found they work okay in RAID 0 on my previous build, as long as I'm using a hardware based RAID controller.

In lockdown, so building a new PC

Hi All, It's been 6 years since I built my last PC, so I figured now was the time to update it. To be honest, the main impetus was the release of Half Life: Alyx, which my current rig struggles with combined with being in lockdown. I also do quite a bit of video work, which was taking forever...

Aorus Engine / MSI Afterburner give different overclock results with same settings on RTX 2080

Hi All, As the thread title suggests, I've recently got a Gigabyte RTX 2080 OC Gaming card, and am seeing some weirdness when attempting to overclock. Following gradual increases in both GPU and memory clock, I've found that I can get stable results with GPU clock at 1945 (+130), memory at...
