is running Ubuntu from a USB stick slowing things down

running live distros over USB is fast because they put the OS in ram. Installing ubuntu on a flash drive is always going to be slow (unless it's a USB SSD ;-)). Samba/cifs performance is actually fairly poor, so i'm not sure you'll get more than 7.7MB/s. that close to 100Mb/s ethernet speeds...

    ATI drivers..

they are ok now, but they pretty much only support ubuntu. If you like your distros more bleeding edge you are going to have to go with the OSS radeon driver, which is actually fairly good if like me your gaming extends to xmoto...

    DT770 vs SRH840 vs ATH-M50 vs HD25-II

While you are wearing them, very little. If you don't wear them they transform into little speakers.... I've actually managed to watch a whole TV show thinking my speakers where sounding weird and not being as loud as usual, but actually was listening to the headphones.

    DT770 vs SRH840 vs ATH-M50 vs HD25-II

I've used the DT770 (sold them now), and kept the HD25-II. I use them at work and to game. DT770 sound fine amped and unamped. HD25-II don't need an amp for sure. They are very different headsets (I also have HD595, and had grado SR80s). I loved the DT770, but they are too big & heavy, and when...

    Ubuntu 64 bit

You must be the only person that I have heard say it's easier to go 64bits with windows... I've been using 64bit linux for over 6yrs now, from early opteron days, and apart from flash there has never been too many problems. Early on a few driver issues on some IDE controllers (i was on scsi...

    Hazro series - HZ30Wi, HZ30WiQ, HZ27WA, HZ27WB & HZ27WC

Depending on what the HZ27WC LCD controller does it could range from no signal, to the screen being partially filled with the image. I'm guessing the later would happen, otherwise seeing the BIOS bootup and other things would simply not work. I'm also guessing PS3/Xbox360 output in maximum at...

    Spec me some headphones

Senn HD25-II. Don't leak at all, great sound isolation and very robust, don't need an amp to sound great. I havent heard the cheaper SP variant but some second hand one will probably be in the price range.

Who makes AV receivers that concentrate on quality rather than gimmicks?

i'd definately agree with that. Now Dolby headphones? No those fake surround headphones are terrible.

In Search of a Decent Distro

Try arch linux. Always up to date thanks to it's rolling release schedule. This an old topic. You need to compile gst-plugins-bad and gst-plugins-ugly + gst-ffmpeg from scratch or find someone that provides them for your distro. There are quite a few rpm's out there for centos.

    Recommended Netbook/Laptop for Linux?

On netbook make sure you don't get anything with a GMA500 in it. Look for something pinetrail based (N4/5xx + NM10) or atom based. Best to avoid broadcom wifi chipsets and also check for one without bios blacklists so if all goes wrong you can go and swap it out with a good wifi chipset. To be...

    Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Mechanical Keyboard

Thanks a lot for the comparison. I'm not a huge fan of the Model M's huge key spacing. The noise is a bit of a killer though. I may have to look into the Das Keyboard 'slient' witbh Cherry MX brown switches. (instead of 'blue' ones from what I undersand is on the Razer leyboards). Getting a...

Switchable Graphics (laptop) with ubuntu 10.10

Do : sudo cat /sys/module/radeon/parameters/modeset Another way to check it's working is to see how fast you can swtich from a tty to X and back (Ctrl+Alt+F1 and back to Ctrl+Alt+F7). It should be near instant. On my older radeon driver + kernel (2.6.32), i get huge tearing but it's pretty...

    New SSD Boot Timer

Does this count? For people having trouble reading thats 16s to desktop with an X25-M G2. Max disk throughput is 265MB/s. not bad with SATA II being theoretically limited to 300MB/s. Using btrfs. Note this is slightly old when the drive was new, although with new kernel versions i'm pretty sure...

    Perc 5i & Windows 7

Server pulls on non server edition windows don't work great unfortunately. I had a Perc 3 or 4 (can't remember now...) in my desktop a while back and couldn't get it to run in XP. Ran in linux like a dream though. Another thing to try is to grab the drivers direct from LSI since Perc5/i are...

    How long as Iplayer worked?

Yes i've noticed this as well, kind of surprised me. Even html5 sites like vimeo seem to work much better in firefox. This is with the latest chromium vs firefox 3.6 (stable) and flash 10.2 without VDPAU acceleration.
