MBP - Replace HDD with a 7200rpm....

Not worth the bother IMO. Seek times are a bit quicker, but with a pile of RAM installed caching takes the edge off. Transfer rates between a 7200 and a big (200GB+) 5400 drive are not much different.

I swapped my drive once it was out of warranty, but then again 80Gb to 250Gb was more worthwhile.

Are you sure 25GB is going to be enough for Vista?

I've got a 32GB partition of vista with Steam, HL2:EP2 and Portal installed on it (nothing else) and I've got a whopping 3GB of free space left! Vista is a mother of an install.

Panzer

Turn off system restore if you don't need it, and run Disk Cleanup and remove the Hibernation file. You'll get back a few GB just like that.

Unfortunately I don't know which 160gb 5400rpm is currently in mine, system profiler says it's a Fujitsu MHW2160BHPL, but a quick google reveals that to not always be true

Eh, how? I assume system profiler interrogates the drive firmware.

I don't hold much stock in Fujitsu laptop drives. We get a split between them and Hitachi's in the ThinkPads we get from work. The Hitachi's are faster and more reliable.

I prefer Hitachi or Seagate in that order. So naturally I've got a Samsung in mine because it was an absolute bargain!

I skim read this thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=340881

Hmm, that's the complete opposite of what Atomiser & Justin said

Warranty Document 2 said:
Apple reserves the right to refuse service on products that have serial numbers altered, defaced or removed or that are damaged due to accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider), unauthorised modification, extreme environment (including extreme temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes. In such event, Apple may return the product to you without servicing it.

Surely the faulty installation repair.... you highlighted is only talking about the misuse part? A new HDD would surely void the warranty under 'unauthorised modification'?

Did the Authorised repair place say it wouldn't void the warranty?

It says it in the document. Unless done by a re-seller it would void the warranty.

the 7K200 is the fastest 2.5" HDD atm. Period.

Sauce?

The Bare Feats review, has the Hitachi 7k200 recording faster times for large sustained transfers, but the Seagate recording faster times for small random transfers.

So we've got Justin & atomiser saying to get the Seagate, and MagicBoy, WotDa & Concorde Rules saying to get the Hitachi

Would it therefore be a fair assumption that the difference between these two drives is negligible, so go with whichever warranty/brand I prefer?

Go with the drive with the fastest transfer in what you plan on doing.

Most of the time I imagine you'll not be doing many small random transfers.
