Samsung F1 320GB Single Platter

I thought i read that all of the F1 range use the dense 334gb platter, but Samsung just limit the capacity to 250gb for the 250/500/750gb versions.

Apparently not and it does make sense really. I read over on xtremesystems that the 250/500/750 use 250gb platters and the 320/640/1tb use the new 334gb platters.

These drives are quick :D

Heh, looking forward to getting mine, should have it tommorrow. Goodbye Raptor!
Not sure if you play games or not but if you do, can you let us know if load times are faster than a 150gb raptor? :)

I switched from 150gb raptor to WD 500GB 5000AAKS & to be honest windows isnt as snappy & game load times are slower especially if I'm running two accounts of everquest - zone times are slower.

Also to note on this new Samsung 320gb the actual access time states around 13.5ms, I do know the Raptor is around 8ms so wont Raptors always be faster in terms of gaming?

I'm thinking of getting one of the new WD 640GB drives (2 platter), I guess those should be of similar speed.

...Just wish they'd hurry up and arrive. :)

I can put up with a bit slower if it means that I get rid of the god-awful rattle they make. I don't think game load times will make so much of a difference that it will affect me too badly, but I have plenty of games on my HD like Crysis and COD4 so i'll check for you. :)

no and you can tell from the STR benches that the 750 uses 3x250gb platters, it's results are too far from the 1TB and 320GB drives to use the same 330gb platter.

it's still a fast drive and @ 80 quid it's a steal right now.

yeh that's the remaining reason to own a raptor, snappiness on the desktop....now that 7.2k rpm drives have overtaken the raptor in STR there's no other compelling reasons to have one.

if you swapped that AAKS for a more recent drive with higher density platters you'd most likely find games loading as fast or faster than the raptor too.

I still think the Raptor would rule on the desktop, due to its lower seek times. I plan to use my Raptor as my Windows drive (currently a games drive) to replace an old POS 80Gb Maxtor, and will use the Samsung F1 as my new games drive.

Noise isn't really an issue for me, as all my drives are suspended by elastic in my Solo.

Yeah, it's amazing how 7'2000rpm drives have caught up so much, there's no need to buy a Raptor at all nowadays, they just seem unecessary, inefficient, and out-dated. :(

Thats great, thanks for all the info.

So with being lazy & not looking at benches am I right in saying these 320gb plater drives & the 750gb 3 x 250gb platter Samsung drives are faster than all the current available Western Digitial & Seagate 7200.11 drives?

Also with the introduction of ICH10 in the upcoming P45 chipset, do you think that will improve speed rates?

the 320gb appears to be from benches. Ive got the 750gb one, hd tach gives me an average read of 75mb/s so its a fair bit slower according to that. I replaced my raptor with the 750gb drive n even though they both have the same average read in hd tach the 750 f1 drive seems to load apps faster
