The MAN-BQ

First of all, gas is a massive NO. The MAN-BQ must be capable of running on nothing but burning bits of trees and petrol. Gas is more of a.....gay way of going about it.

I'll try and get a scale drawing of my ideal BBQ, but you've pretty much hit it on the head with the above quote.
Gas is just not right when it comes to BBQs.

Local blacksmiths made my mates twin bbq out of two barrells cut in half. Top half used as lid.

The filling hole modified to accept vacuum cleaner/leaf blower to get those embers really going fast to speed up when you can start cooking.

Pretty sure I have some pictures somewhere which I will rake out.

It's definitely the way the to go.

Being from South Africa, we know a bit about bbq'ing (hence now known as braai'ing or phonetically 'bry' for you english :) )

This is a national past time and one I sorely miss living in London with no garden. It is specifically for wood and none of this pansy gas stuff. Real men use wood, not gas, get over it.

A very good cheap, already mentioned, suggestion would be cut a barrel in half and weld some legs onto it, then weld some attachments on the top for the grill to rest on at varying heights, however after some use the heat within the barrel will create holes through it, so it's not a long term solution.

The best solution is to build a bricked up area for you to place the wood and the grill within, normally with a chimney and below this a storage area for wood (this may not work in the UK as its normally wet and the wood needs to be kept dry, you could enclose this area with a door)

Here are a couple examples: Notice the storage areas for wood below the fire area and areas on the side to store outgoing/incoming meat.

here is a chimneyless braai area

and if you wanna go posh then make an entertainment area out of it like so

It honestly is not that expensive if you build it yourself, just needs some bricks......think of it as manly lego *HRR HRR HRR* It is a semi permanent structure though.

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas :)

If you can get a large old keg it would make for a better conversation piece, also better quality stainless steel.

My uncle did a family BBQ on a massive old iron bathtub, the cooking area on that was huge plus the legs were already attached!
