This is a national past time and one I sorely miss living in London with no garden. It is specifically for wood and none of this pansy gas stuff. Real men use wood, not gas, get over it.
A very good cheap, already mentioned, suggestion would be cut a barrel in half and weld some legs onto it, then weld some attachments on the top for the grill to rest on at varying heights, however after some use the heat within the barrel will create holes through it, so it's not a long term solution.
The best solution is to build a bricked up area for you to place the wood and the grill within, normally with a chimney and below this a storage area for wood (this may not work in the UK as its normally wet and the wood needs to be kept dry, you could enclose this area with a door)
Here are a couple examples: Notice the storage areas for wood below the fire area and areas on the side to store outgoing/incoming meat.

It honestly is not that expensive if you build it yourself, just needs some bricks......think of it as manly lego *HRR HRR HRR* It is a semi permanent structure though.
