AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Hi gareth, my aim is to try and oc my cpu its just with it being my first one im taking it slow. I have just finished running my 2nd set of tests, the first one was everything on stock just to check everything was in working order and it all went fine. The second test i did was again on stock apart from i changed the vcore down to 1.25 instead of the stock 1.35. I ran prime95 for 2 hrs with no errors and my max temp was coming up at 41c for the cpu and the motherboard was showing 41c also. I was getting these temps from asus pc probe.

Its just now im not to sure on the next step do i up the multiplyer? if so do i need to up the vcore? its when i have to start doing these kinda things along with oc ram i get kinda confused.

Finally just curious to know what is a safe "Motherboard temp" with my cpu now showing 32c idle my motherboard is showing 40c seems kinda warm maybe i just need to turn the fans up a wee bit.

rumble291. what cooler you using?

45c for idle is high tbh.

Yeh lol! Its a crappy Asaka one with no heatpipes it was fine for my dual core. I didn't use the stock one that came with my CPU because that was even worse! when the fans at full it idles around 39c I cant stand the headaches though with it at full blast all the time.

http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?...U coolers&type_sub=Retail cooler&model=AK-862

thats the link to it. What coolers do you reccomend guys? Ideally I would perfer something pretty quiet

Cheers,

Kurt

Im going to try and push mine a little bit further now gonna try 3.4ghz at 1.275 like modez, if i decide to try 3.6ghz what is the likley vcore needed 1.30 maybe? if there is not enough volatage for cpu i take it the machine will not boot, if so how would i get to the bios to change it? or will it always boot up to bios screen?

Really sorry for asking pretty stupid questions its just i wanna cover myself anyway possible incase i muck it up.

Ive been browsing this thread for a while and i must congratulate gareth170 and martini1991 on the overclocks they have been achieving.
I know this is only about an hour but a certain parent will not allow me to leave my pc on while i am out of the house and i have to go to work. I will do an 8hour blend session when i get the free time but don't hold your breath as it may be a while before i do.

Hi, Bought my 965be last week from ocuk. My attempt to get over 4ghz prime stable. Memory is Dominator GT 2000c8, motherboard is Crosshair iii formula.

Nice work mate thats pretty impressive would keep an eye on the temp tho 55c i think the max is around 62c so i red, i have been looking at getting the board you have mate, is it true it has pre defined oc settings in the bios for the phenom at 3.4, 3.6 and 3.8?

Martini1991: thanks a lot for the OCCT test, you and Gareth both have a sweet motherboard by the looks of it! :)

rumble291: Welcome to the thread! :) . . . . please read the welcome post here and preferably the whole thread before you take off . . . . that looks like a good start there, don't worry about the discrepancy between the vCore you set in BIOS and the actual vCore your processor gets (as seen in CPU-z etc), not sure if AMD overdrive understands any voltage changes made from the BIOS? . . if you change volts in OverDrive though it should show up correctly?

liamcrane: Looks like you got a nice "undervolt going there, if your sure it's nice and stable make a note of the vCore you set in BIOS as well as the vCore your chip gets in windows (idle/load) then bump up the CPU multi by a notch and repeat the process . . . if it crashes or caused a Prime Blend error/reboot then go back into BIOS and increase the vCore by one or two notches, test again . . . . we are gonna repeat this process again and again, increasing processor frequency using the CPU multi, testing, increasing vCore, testing etc etc . . . keep a good notes of the BIOS set vCore, the windows reported vCore, idle/load temps etc . . . your rolling! :D . . . P.S can you redo your screenies and make them a bit smaller (i.e "clump" the windows together and crop the image to avoid excessive blank space/desktop icons, also don't forget to include your name somewhere in the image! :)

phill0i: Welcome to the thread! :) . . . . please read the welcome post here and preferably the whole thread before you take off . . . . Very nice first result there! . . . could you be about to join Martin & Gareth in the elite "4GHz Deneb Club" :D . . . don't forget to include your name in the screenies!

@everyone else: Hope all is good and I am hoping one or two or you can add a little Star Wars vibe to your future screenies! ;)

It only gets to 55c with prime95 but it is watercooled, normal usage 33c idle and in the 40s gaming etc. Yes there are pre defined oc settings in the bios.

liamcrane; my 955 BE seems similar to yours in that it will run stock speed at 1.225 vcore. I'm currently prime blending @3.6GHz on 1.3625v (2 hours 10 mins so far, feeling optimistic!). Set the HT/NB at 2200, and gotten the CPU-NB voltage all the way down at 1.225v.

There is a stability relationship between vcore and CPU-NB voltage; I had the latter down at 1.1v, but then I needed 1.3875 vcore to stay stable. It's possible that being more generous with CPU-NB results in a much lower vcore requirement, but I've yet to test that properly; if I get another 2 hours I might try for 3.6GHz at stock voltage, which would be awesomesauce :)

Oh, and for those interested in undervolting and how low a PII can go, have a look in this thread from last week. Following this Tom's Hardware article, it's amazing how much voltage you can knock off the lower p-states and just how cool your CnQ can end up :)

nelcon: Welcome too :), sorry you sneaked in there just after I made the post above! :p . . . how super, 4.1GHz screenie! . . . 8 hours prime blend stable also, great work! . . . please read the welcome post here and look forward to any more results!

Nelcon how are you finding the board? Like i say i have been doing a lot of research into the board and its got fab reviews!! im looking to set up a crossfire and like the look of the 16x 16x speed as well as the pre defined settings in the bios for overclocking. Its just i have an am2+ board at the mo and getting that am3 board means needing ddr3 ram which is another extra cost i could do without as well as buying another 5850 to crossfire :).

Wayne thanks again for your help into my first OC its going good so far

Thanks Big.Wayne I think it was Gurusan who purchased my 555be allowing me to get the 965be. Like most people who have a 965be to try to get to 4ghz stable is the target.Liamcrane the Board is very good, but the best memory I have used and Ive tried a few, so far the best is Corsair Dominator GT CMG4GX3M2A2000C8 which is expensive.

cool cheers for that nelcon :) think i will wait and see if the price drops a little but its deffo my next big investment :). As for your overclock i see you are gonna try to hit the 4ghz are you using the pre defined 3.8ghz phenom oc settings in the bios and tweaking them or just doing it completely from stock?

the HT link does nothing much to the performance. even at 1ghz u won't notice a different...

anyway, i'm still trying for 3.9ghz 1.5v, it failed afew times. now i've upped the cpu-nb voltage to 1.35v. temp is 53c under prime load.

just hoping it won't burn out with all this extra voltages..
