AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

ht link was left on auto, nb frequency 2809 which makes a difference to memory. Just to let you know gareth170 it wouldnt pass prime95 at 4.1 on 1.520 but that little bit extra allowed it to pass stable. It would boot into windows at 4.2 and run super pi at that speed but no chance of stability.

The trouble with mine is I have 2 3870x2 on another loop but I am using a typhoon 3 res and pump so the water is mixed. The cpu is on a 240 and gpus on a 360 gonna swap them round and add another rad and seperate loops later.

I have just OC to 3.5ghz and it seems to be stable, tested for 50mins with prime. Set vcore to 1.375 in bios it was showing 1.30 in cpuz & asus pc probe during testing. Max temp was 45c. What do you think?

When we test our OC with prime does it actually put the CPU under 100% load? The reason i ask is as my results show my max temp was 45c would that mean if i was playing a high end game such as crysis on max settings it would not go over 45c? I dont believe a game could put your CPU at 100%

Thanks mate im only looking to go to 3.6ghz think that will be fine for me, do you think i will have to hit the 1.40 vcore mark to keep it stable? Its i dont want to start to have to mess with upping the nb voltage and ram etc just wanna try and keep it simple.

Thanks again

liamcrane; I think you may well get to 3.6 with stock voltages, if your 955 is anything like mine...

1.3675v core, 1.225v cpu-nb (below stock!), 3.6GHz, made 4 hours of prime blend without a hitch. Stopped it to try going lower.

Now turned down to 1.35, 1 hour 15 of stability so far. I like this chip :]

*edit* after vdroop, it's only getting ~1.335v :o

gareth170: I just noticed in post #1060 you said "the HT link does nothing much to the performance" . . . while I agree it may not be a massive boost there is possibly some advantage to running with a faster HT-Link? . . . . In post #399 I posted a really basic set of results showing the differences between simple CPU-NB and HT-Link speeds, have you done any testing like this yourself? . . . if so can you post up the data please, if not then maybe when you feel a bit better you could devise a set of tests/benches yourself to share with everyone . . . waddaya reckon?

liamcrane: nice work my friend, nice small steps, plenty of testing and note taking, hopefully you feel a bit more "engaged" in the process now? :) . . . to answer your question the Prime Blend test is pretty heavy going on the processors so I don't expect many games would take the temps higher? . . . there may be some but personally I found my games don't heat the chip anywhere near the same level as the torture tests . . . . 45°C full load is sweet, I'd say by the time you get to 3.6GHz you should get some deep testing done, gaming, priming, encoding, folding, whatever is it you do but give it a good hammering in order to feel confident the clock is good and robust . . . . it's always tempting to "rush" a bit when overclocking but nearly always leads to frustration when you lose control of the system stability . . . if you take it at a nice pace and give yourself enough time to "verify" the stability then when it all goes **** up after pushing on with the overclock you kinda know the last setting you changed wasn't so hot! :D

Thanks Wayne im going to take the next step to 3.6 and test it throughly. Can i ask why does the 1.375vcore i set in the bios only show as 1.30 when im testing? Also at what clock speed would i have to start to think about ajusting NB & RAM voltages, the reason i ask is i kinda wanna stay clear of all that as i do not understand it and as for HT i have no idea how that work lol :)

Thanks a mill everyone

Big.Wayne, i've done some quick tests awhile ago i didn't notice much different if any. also i've read it could slow down the system. but i will do some tests again later (if prime crashs lol) or tomorrow and post here.

just a thought, the athion II doesn't have L3 cache, so by upping the HT link you'll see more of a benefit?
