Best 24in monitor on OcUK?

PC Pro and Techradar have both reviewed the LG W2442PA, which from what I gather is the same as the W2442PE.

Here is another http://www.wirefresh.com/lg-flatron-w2442pa-24-monitor-review/

The Benq has a problem with ghosting and colours, and the Samsung gets quite a bad review in some places, look at cnet.

I'd go with the LG if I were you, there don't seem to be any reports of the obvious problems the other two have.

That review states that the monitor has 2ms response time and the one on OcUK has 5ms, are you sure its not a different model?

Edit- After looking at the monitor on other sites it also states it has 2m response time, so is OcUK wrong then?

It is a 5ms (typical) panel, the 2ms is a measurement for grey to grey. If you look around you'll find that there are different specs stated on different sites.

Ah ok cool, would 5ms be deemed too high to play games these days?

Little bit put off the samsung due to the stand as well.

The EW2420 offers by far the best contrast and highest overall image quality - provided you get a good unit! It seems that the quality of these is a bit variable whereas the LG is somewhat more consistent. The simple reason for the LG not being talked about so much is that it is a lesser known model for entertainment uses. I certainly haven't had hands on experience with it but some of my collegues use some at work and it seems to be quite well-rounded. It still can't compete with a good EW2420 but it's certainly more responsive. The '5ms' figure is an absolute best-case response time using overdrive. This has been discussed at length on various posts, by myself and others, so no need to repeat the reasons why this won't be an issue.

Techradar gave the EW2420 a raaaaave review, but seem to gloss over the response time issue that other review sites pick up on. I wish reviews would be more standardised!

I like the multiple inputs though, and the idea of a VA panel at that price level is nice.

If the inter-unit quality was consistent and the responsiveness was a bit better it would be a total no-brainer. If you don't like the gloss you could opt for the BL2400PT. Unfortunately these are two pretty major issues and it it's a real shame really. But you can't have everything in an LCD monitor - especially not for under £200. ;)

So the W2442PE-BF is the W2442PA??

And PCM2 I can't find all this info about the response rate, its a bit confusing as I'm not sure if these 2 are the same.

Could you confirm that it doesn't ghost badly in games please?

I've decided I'm going to buy the Dell U2311H. I know it's very expensive and way out of my budget but it seems like it's the only monitor that is consistently recommended here and it is £20-30 cheaper now then the usual price I've seen them go for.

To be honest, the deal breaker was when one of the Dons mentioned something about watching movies in bed with his gf and the viewing angles being really good, I do that a lot so I'll go get one, haha.

The W2442PE and W2442PA appear to be the same, from what I gathered looking at various websites. There was some talk about the PE being a slight improvement on the PA, but I couldn't find any specifics. There are two versions, BF (black bezel) and SF (silver bezel).

I believe that was me, however I was talking about the Viewsonic VP2365WB!

PCM2, the 5ms response time quoted on the specification for the LG W2442PE/A is the typical response time, not the best case!

Just remember, Franco - the U2311H will give you accurate colours and a nice range. But high vibrancy isn't part of that repertoire as it's accurate within sRGB and has a fairly aggressive anti-glare coating. Contrast could be a bit better too. Overall this leads to an entertainment experience that is certainly quite a nice one once you appreciate this but I don't want you having false expectations and being disappointed :).

This is a tough decision right franco?

I am buying a 24" tomorrow and after reading stuff over 2 days I am still no nearer to deciding! My budget is the same as franco's kinda, £200 max. I was going with the P2450h but due to its wobbly stand and comments on forums it might not be the best choice.

I have kind of narrowed it down to LG W2442PE-BF 24", IIyama Prolite E2472HD, and the samsung mentioned above..

HELP! Buying tomorrow! Would I be better off dropping to 23" for better quality for the money?

Cheers

The Benq you've linked to doesn't review particularly well ,take a look over at PC Pro.

The only one without any real drawbacks (apart from normal TN panel limitations, bad viewing angles, especially from underneath) is the LG.

Ok, well it looks like its the LG for me... still going to research though, don't want to make the wrong edition.

PCM2, the 5ms response time quoted on the specification for the LG W2442PE/A is the typical response time, not the best case!

It may be typical of a grey to grey transition but you need to look beyond that value, trust me. Manufacturers often state best case or at least fairly optimal transitions as typical because they can and, frankly, everybody does it. There are far too many variables and it is extremely unlikely that 5ms is actually typical of a pixel transition on the monitor. Considering humans can't perceive 5ms transitions there is clearly more at play here and this has already been discussed. To be honest a lot depends on the 60Hz refresh rate as there is a minimum of just over 16ms between frames - this is well within the human range of perception. As stated the overdrive trailing can be seen regardless of response time and the presence of this and the way its handled all influences the apparent responsiveness. Some experienced monitor users will tell you they have used some IPS panels with 6ms grey to grey overdrive that seem more responsive than TN panels rated at 2ms.

I couldn't really care less what PC Pro say in an embarassingly short so-called review. Take a look here and here for a more rounded view and comparison with others in the price range. We don't spend all that time and effort writing out that many words for nothing you know. If a short snippet was acceptable in our eyes and the eyes of our readers it would be used all the time. Sounds as if PC Pro were having some gamma issues with a sub-standard VW2420, but regardless of this the colour reproduction can't match an IPS monitor on a technical level. On the same level it far outclasses the colour limitations tied to Twisted Nematic technology which it competes with in the price range. The contrast wipes the floor with even vastly more expensive IPS panels and coupling these things together with the semi-glossy screen provides a sumptuous entertainment experience. The subjective nature of viewing and the actual context, for non-professional purposes, is far more important for non-professional uses than some questionable benchmarking. In the case of the EW2420 and other monitors sharing the AMVA panels has already been said - shame about the variability and shame about the response time.

God this is a seriously, seriously though decision. I don't fancy risking it for the Benq if its a lottery how good your unit is and due to the ghosting of some reviews. I'm tempted to just go for the samsung thats on offer. So many good reviews about it and I could live with a **** stand...

Once the monitor is in place you shouldn't really care too much about the stand. The build quality of the monitor itself is very nice given the price and actually the stand could be a hell of a lot worse (looking in your direction BenQ V20 series). I would continue to recommend the P2450H more highly than the EW2420 because quite frankly Samsung are more consistent with the quality on offer. The dithering algorithms, response time algorithms and colour handling is all pretty good on the P2450H and the image is crisp and vibrant. For people who haven't experienced the delights of a broad gamut IPS monitor the image would never be described as 'washed out'.
