Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

these look excellent looking forward to ordering one, does about £140 after cashback seem the norm? cheers

I got mine from a place that was offering it for £221 (or £121 with the cashback) however this is with free delivery (IE 3-5 working days), I ended up paying £233 (or £133) with the cashback as

1) I opted for the next day delivery @ £6.99
2) I payed with a credit card (1.3% surcharge)

I'm definitely going to get one of these come pay day - regarding an OS, this is a bit of a first for me so any help would be appreciated. It's just going to be used as a NAS so would something like FREENAS be sufficient?

I've installed ESXi 4.1 on mine and stacked it with 8GB RAM. ESXi is installed to an 8GB USB Stick which runs off the internal USB port towards the front of the server motherboard.

I'm running WHS v 1 virtualised and Elastix telephone server on it at the mo and it's not even breaking a sweat.

Running WHS virtualised means I can copy the datastore containing the system partition and therefore have a backup of the WHS system I can restore from.

:D

FreeNAS v7.x yes, but FreeNAS v8.x is not currently working with the Microserver.

FreeNAS is very easy to get up and running an there are plenty of guides around. You may also want to take a look at Unraid (3 disks is free) and OpenFiler to see if they are better suited.

:)

would this only effect the onboard raid or would it effect ZFS to?
I've got a raidz1 ZFS array on mine with FreeBSD 8.2 (previously 8.1), no problems to report.

That said, I'll probably be migrating the OS to Solaris Express for a more up-to-date ZFS implementation with iSCSI compatibility (not supported under FreeBSD at present) :D

Need to know this urgently, as I forgot to bring my USB keyboard home so borrowing one to install.

Im trying to install Windows server 2003 on (yes I know I am lame, I am going to purchase WHS later). but there are no server 2003 drivers released???

ok usb sound card arrived, once I found win7 drivers for it, works great, I went for a full 7.1 card based on the c-media 106 chipset, apart from having to reverse the left and right front and sub + centre, a good card

If you are planning on installing another OS soon anyway, you can download a 3 month trial of Windows Server 2008 from microsoft and all the drivers are on the HP site fro that that OS.
