Remember when Steam used to look like this?

its bloated to hell compared to something like origin thats nice and streamlined and does what you want without smashing adverts in your face

I think you misunderstand the meaning of bloatware.. People use the features in Steam, they're useful, which isn't bloat.

And I presume by "smashing adverts in your face" you mean, opening a window with an advert or two, that can be instantly dismissed when closing a game for the first time in your logged in session.

What's that? you don't want any adverts? Untick the box in settings then? Want to start the client up in the library? Tick a box saying so.

Compare this to say.. Origin... Which doesn't "smash adverts in your face" at all. Apart from say when you start the client up, get directed to the store front page and get a pop-up window telling you whats popular today......

And lets not ignore system usage eh? That's important when deciding if a program is bloated or not. But wait! That can't be right, Origin is using more than six times as much memory as Steam after just launching and opening the client?

Steam is bloatware? You wouldn't know bloatware if it came and smashed it's huge Crysis promotion in your face.

lolorigin...horrid piece of software.

Was Steam still like that when HL2 first came out, that was the last time I used it for several years until I started PC gaming again last year.

Oh man it was awesome when steam came out, it was the first time I was able to play HL as my disc was damaged.

And the stability of the friends list :D

Hi,

very much the good old days, to be honest i have never had an issue running steam, i know a few say when it first came out it was bad, but to be honest I've always been on it from the start and whilst the improvments have been many and great its always just worked, maybe i'm just lucky.

Thinking about the friends list, if memory serves right, did it not take nearly a year to get that working, then it came on for about a month, then went off again for months before coming in as part of a UI overhaul?

I used to hate steam until about 2007. If a game was on steam I was like "whyyyyyyyyyyyy whyyyyyyyyyy" :p Used to be more hassle than it was worth.
