The Scouring of Tavos IV – Mission 1
The first mission of the campaign is a Purge The Alien skirmish across a power station on the outskirts of Auren, one of the major cities on Tavos IV.
We rolled for Warlord Traits, deciding that each trait could only affect each players own units:
Attackers:
Warlock – Split Fire
Chaos Lord – Soul Blaze
Aspiring Champion – Fear
Big Mek – Coordinated Assault
Defenders:
Farseer – Falcon's Swiftness (useless)
Commander – Re-roll resverves
Librarian – Coordinated Assault
Rolling for psychic powers, Warlocks from both sides took Conceal/Reveal, Murehk took Guide, Prescience and Terrify. Arcadius rolled The Avenger and Vortex of Doom.
We randomed the Warlords and Farseer Murehk and Warlock Kyrilith were chosen as warlords for the purpose of Slay the Warlord secondary objective.
Deployment:
Turn 1:
The battle began with darkness still over the land.
The defenders won the roll and began with the Vypers accelerating down the left and decimating the Warp Spiders with a hail of Shuriken fire. The Spiders passed their morale check and held their ground. The razorback advanced and opened up with it's Heavy Bolter on the mass of Orks, the darkness made it difficult to draw a target and only a single Ork fell. The rest of the defence force suffered from the lighting conditions, the Fire Prism failing to destroy the Rhino.
With a roar and firing their crude weapons into the air the Orks charged forwards with reckless abandon. Most of the Attacking force advanced as well, the Chaos Lord and his retinue moving at full speed down the left flank. The remaining Warp Spiders jumped forwards and destroyed one of the Vypers, stunning the crew of the second, before jumping back into the cover of the power plant. The lootas only killed a single Ranger, who had hunkered down in the rocks. The Obliterators shifted their bodies to form Assault Cannons and took a hull point off the Razorback. The Traitor Marine with the plasma gun fired off a shot at the Combat Squad behind the Razorback and managed to wound the Librarian!
Current Score:
Attackers – 2 (Vyper, First Blood)
Defenders – 0
Turn 2:
Dawn rose over the horizon and the defenders steadied the grip on their guns. The Dark Reapers, Jetbikes, Tactical Squad and Razorback all opened up on the rapidly approaching Orks but thanks to the Kustom Force Field carried by the Big Mek, only six fell. The Leman Russ and Fire Prism fired at the opposing Fire Prism but both missed. The right flank shot at the second Ork squad but was even less succesful, killing just three Orks! The Jetbikes moved forwards and shot at the Bikes, killing two.
The Warp Spiders jumped forward and finished off the damaged Vyper, before once again jumping back into cover. The Jetbikes moved out of cover and wrecked the Razorback, The Obliterators fired Lascannons at the Fire Prism but failed to damage the fast moving skimmer. The Orks charged the Combat squad evacuating the smoking Razorback and cut them all down. The Lootas and Chaos Marines down the left flank shot at the Rangers again and killed another of the Eldar. The large Ork squad charged the Leman Russ and ripping open the hatch, slaughtered the crew. The Chaos Lord and his squad charged the Eldar Jetbikes, the Warlock killed the Aspiring Champion in a challenge before the Chaos Lord slaughtered the Farseer (despite taking a wound from his Daemon weapon!) the remaining jetbikes fled but were cut down by the remaining bikers. The Fire Prism shot at the Marines but scattered and killed enough Veterans that the squad fled from the battlefield!
Current Score:
Attackers – 10 (2xVyper, Veteran Squad, Combat Squad, Razorback, Leman Russ, Guardian Jetbikes, Farseer, Slay The Warlord, First Blood)
Defenders – 0
Turn 3:
The Jetbikes on the left flank destroyed the small Chaos Space Marine squad. The Eldar and Space Marines shot at the Orks by the Razorback wreck, but only killed four. The Veteran squad arrived in their Chimera and together with the Rangers opened fire on the large Ork mob closing down on them. Despite severe casualties the Ork's morale held. The Chaos Lord and his lone biker were less lucky, disappearing in hail of Plasma fire from the Veterans on board the Chimera and the Marines.
The right flank retaliated against the Jetbikes, two more Obliterators teleported in and combined their fire with the Lootas, Warp Spiders and Marines disembarking from the Rhino. Six jetbikes were wrecked but the remainder passed their morale check. The second Obliterator squad again fired at the Fire Prism without success. The Orks shot up the Tactical squad, killing two. The Marine chose to fall back to the rocks. The defenders battle line was looking increasingly frail. On the left flank the Fire Prism fired and the newly arrived Chimera but missed, the five man Chaos Marine squad charged and destroyed the remainding Rangers.
Current Score:
Attackers – 11 (2xVyper, Veteran Squad, Combat Squad, Razorback, Leman Russ, Guardian Jetbikes, Farseer, Rangers, Slay The Warlord, First Blood)
Defenders – 3 (CSM, Bikers, Chaos Lord)
Turn 4:
The Jetbikes strafe the newly arrived Obliterators with Shurikens, killing one and wounding the other. The Fire Prism shoots at the massed Chaos Marines killing three. The Dark Reapers and Space Marines shot at the Orks and finally broke their morale, despite the presence of the Big Mek. The Librarian called on his psychic power and attempted to invoke Vortex of Doom on the nearby Obliterators, he failed his psychic test and killed himself and his entire unit! The right flank continued killing Orks but despite only six of the beasts being left alive they refused to flee.
The lone Obliterator continued his hunt near the water tower, killing another Jetbike. The Obliterators in the centre continued to fail to damage the Fire Prism. Combined fire from the Orks and Chaos Marines down the left finished off the Ultramarines near the Veterans. The Jetbikes moved out of cover and killed two of the combat squad by the rocks.
Current Score:
Attackers – 14 (2xVyper, Veteran Squad, 3xCombat Squad, Razorback, Leman Russ, Guardian Jetbikes, Farseer, Rangers, Librarian, Slay The Warlord, First Blood)
Defenders – 3 (CSM, Bikers, Chaos Lord)
Turn 5:
With the Jetbikes finally in the open the Marines, Autocannon and Dark Reapers all opened fire, downing three of the fast moving skimmers. The Chimera and the Veterans killed both Marines and Orks but both still refused to flee. The Fire Prism tried to take out the Rhino but missed. The Jetbikes failed to finish off the Obliterator.
The Obliterator killed another Jetbike, in the centre the Obliterators fire Plasma Cannons at the Dark Reapers, killing all of them! The edge of the blast even took a hull point off the Fire Prism. The Jetbikes killed the Marine with the Lascannon before wisely retreating into cover. The ork mob fleeing finally rallied. The Fire Prism took a shot at the Chimera again but still couldn't find it's mark.
Current Score:
Attackers – 15 (2xVyper, Veteran Squad, 3xCombat Squad, Razorback, Leman Russ, Guardian Jetbikes, Farseer, Rangers, Librarian, Dark Reapers, Slay The Warlord, First Blood)
Defenders – 3 (CSM, Bikers, Chaos Lord)
Turn 6:
The two remianing Jetbikes failed to damage the Obliterator again, it's body seemed to absorb the Shurikens with no effect! The Fire Prism shot at the rallied Orks but missed. The Veterans left the Chimera and the combined firepower caused both orks and Chaos Marines to turn and run!
The Obliterator killed another Jetbike but the survivor held! The Obliterators unleashed Melta fire at the Fire Prism but the pilot dodged it. The Jetbikes and Fire Prism immobilised the Chimera and the renegade Marines and Lootas killed six Veterans.
Current Score:
Attackers – 15 (2xVyper, Veteran Squad, 3xCombat Squad, Razorback, Leman Russ, Guardian Jetbikes, Farseer, Rangers, Librarian, Dark Reapers, Slay The Warlord, First Blood)
Defenders – 3 (CSM, Bikers, Chaos Lord)
Turn 7:
The Jetbike again couldn't damage the Obliterator so made a suicidal charge and was swiftly cut down. The Fire Prism finally killed two more orks causing the Big Mek and his final Boy to run again. The Marines and Autogun in the centre killed another Jetbike and the Chimera and Veterans killed another Chaos Marine causing the last warrior to run.
The Fire Prism finally died to a Plasma shot from the Iron Warriors. The warriors definding the rocks died to combined fire from the Jetbikes and Obliterators. The Fire Prism finally finished off the immobilised Chimera and the Orks killed enough Veterans that the remainder ran from the battlefield, leaving no defenders alive.

Defenders – 6 (2xCSM, Shoota Boyz, Big Mek, Bikers, Chaos Lord)
General Aftermath:
An odd battle, with different people controlling different armies due to availability (I should never be allowed to try and make 5+ saving throws) I think the defenders really suffered from Night Fight in the first turn, it let us get the Orks into combat with very few casualties. They also suffered from not quite being able to finish squads off, a lot of squads survived with only a few members left, so perhaps more focussed shooting would help in the future. Several very amusing moments but the Librarian killing him and his entire unit was easily the best, perhaps The Emprah was right about the Edict of Nikea!
Arcadius looked at the destruction around him, “Fall back to the city!” The battle was lost, they had bloodied the enemy but at a serious cost. He could only hope the reinforcements arrived before the enemy gathered for another assault. He had received reports of Eldar seen on the edges of the battlefield, the reports varied as to which side they appeared to be fighting for. The alien's intentions were always impossible to fathom, it didn't matter they would deal with them too if they threatened the civilians of this world.
