Japanese Grand Prix 2013, Suzuka - Race 15/19

Well, I tuned out for most of the race. The results were inevitable really.

Is it just me, or has the weather also been particularly dull this year with barely any wet weather races?

Marginally more interesting than recent races purely because Vettel wasn't out in front for most of it.

My thoughts exactly.
Like you said , the winner was inevitable.

Before the race started people were saying that Vettel would let Webber win - as we saw, this did not happen.

Vettel is all about winning - he is ruthless, relentless and will not stop until he breaks every single record which MSc currently holds.

I was taking a look at the records, as they currently stand:

Most Career Wins:
MSc, 91
Prost, 51
Senna, 41
Vettel, 35

This year Vettel overtook Alonso, Mansell, Stewart (in the table, above).
Next year, he will target Senna.
In 2015, he will target Prost.
Then (if everything pans out), he can start the long chase for MSc.

For the last few years, I've said that Alonso is the best in F1.
Hamilton - a few weeks ago - stating that Alonso is the best in F1.
I'm now wondering if perhaps, Vettel could stake his claim as being the best in F1. He showed today that he can win when he is not time trialling at the front.

Who is better - Alonso or Vettel - I'm not sure.

Next race: India.
Ridiculously early prediction: Vettel to win.

Also the tires are just killing the competition,

The cheesy tyres were brought in to make racing exciting. We had reached a point with Bridgestone, where drivers were using the same set of tyres for the entire race, then would come into the pits to change tyres on the last lap. The cheesy tyres did add unpredictability to the racing and forced teams to think about differing/unpredictable tyre strategies - which is what most people wanted.

F1 is becoming a joke and DRS is just a fake over take

We had reached a point in the late 00s, where the driver behind needed to be 2-3s faster than the car in front, due to aero. Processions had become de regeur and most people hated processions with no overtaking. DRS was brought in to increase overtaking and introduce a new level of excitement.
DRS achieved this - less processions & drivers in front can no longer rely on aero to protect them from the driver behind.

cars having to much downforce which makes it much harder for a car behind to pass even if he is faster.

This is not the FIA's fault.
Any rules brought in, have to be agreed by the teams. No team, having spent US$Billions on aero work during the last 2 decades, is going to give this all up (only to allow some new team who has no aero data/background), to compete and maybe beat the big team. To tell RBR, McLaren, Ferrari that all the work you did previously is going to be binned. We want to reduce aero by 75%. Those teams would flip.

Any changes which the FIA make, need to be gradual and this is what the FIA do. If you are expecting some radical aero removal any time in the future - forget it. Pigs will fly before this happens.

Vettel has just had a consistently superior car and a team 100% behind him, same as MS in the early noughties - look how is comeback went when he no longer had those things going for him.

I said he'd let Webber win, or wouldn't challenge him IF Webber was in an easy position to win, he wasn't. I didn't think he'd drop 7 seconds and risk dropping an extra place to Grosjean to let Webber win.

Webber screwed up on the strategy, wasn't sure what to do, thought he was in the two stop window, complete screw up, his own fault, game over. Webber/his pit wall guy just messed up the plan completely. They are so used to being in amongst slower cars and doing an extra stop for track position to help him back from the 10th place he got into for some stupid reason. THeir car was vastly superior to the Lotus, Vettel breezed past Grosjean with no problem. If Webber pitted when or near when Vettel did he wouldn't have had much of an issue winning.

AS for today having anything to do with Vettel being better, he was in the vastly superior car and the only car close to or as good(it wasn't necessarily set up as well) made a huge huge screw up on strategy.

As for the race, he had a woeful woeful start, he was only not time trialling it out front because or a big mistake. Grosjean/Lotus are the only race pace threat to Red Bull, yet he defended against the car that has no race pace at all and left a HUGE hole for the only slightly competitive car to jump through. If Webber/Vettel both moved right they'd have locked 1-2 start to finish and Grosjean wouldn't have had the slightest chance.

Look at Vettel's pace and number of laps he could do after Grosjean pitted. Against new tyres he maintained the gap, breezed past him, and Grosjean was pushing harder than he should have to stay upfront to start with hence the tyres going quicker and being out of fuel at the end.

Are you comparing Vettel with Massa? Just admit the move was done and dusted instead of digging your heels in for the sake of your hatred for Seb.

fat john overtook massa on the outside of a corner at the Hungarian GrandPrix
and even massa said how great it was so to answer what you said first
yes fat john would\could go for the over take on the outside ;)

Now proven it wasn't vimto needed his drs(fake overtaking) to make sure because the pass wasn't complete.

Failing to see your point. From the GIF, and what I saw during the race, it looks like the pass has already been completed when his DRS opens, he uses it to gain a small advantage to make sure the pass is 100% complete and that he gets a small (maybe not even noticeable for the period it is open) boost into the first corner as I'm sure any other driver would have done :)

Cause that is the same as turn 1 at Suzuka....the move was done and dusted suggesting otherwise is just being stupid for the sake of it.

well with the race done and dusted and only 370 posts in the thread I think you are very much getting your wish skeeter

I for one, cba with all the whinging, so although watch the fp/qaulii/races pretty much stay out the threads. As the new f1 followers don't seem to understand what f1 is about.

I'm convinced the Renault engines use less fuel than the cars around them.

RBR seem to have the perfect amount of Cylinder cut to help them round a corner and save fuel, just look at Seb over the fast few races where he's able to bolt at any given opportunity.

Maybe this is what Kimi was alluding to when he said that he wanted Lotus to be able to work with Renault much more closely? That was a few weeks back mind, before he signed for Ferrari.

I seriously doubt any team will have an excess of available fuel next year with the new regulations. It will all be about saving fuel from lap 1 next season.
