As someone else mentioned, you can also use pliers - but the risk of damaging the card is much higher.

I took all the hex crews out with pliers and then put them all back in as well. No damage done, it just took a while.

Ouch.
Some of the electronics that get hot impeding the overclocking are not covered again.and no airflow either.
Was lucky with the short block that exists for the Armor, and can cool them with a simple powerful fan.

OK.

Since I refitted the block on my 1080 and took some time to investigate the card closely, just an FYI. If you try to fit EK backplate to your 1080 check it's back closely.

On the MSI Armor manual states where to put the 2 thermal pads, however ignores completely the 2 VRMs (or what ever they are called) near the other 2 (marked in red).
So if you have some spare thermal pad, add some to those two also.

Also replaced the EK Ectotherm (8.5W/mk) and EK pads (3.5W/mk), with TG Kryonaut (12.5W/mk) and Pad 8 (8 W/mk).
Idle temps drop by 5C, to 25C. Full load temps while stress benching a staggering 13C. From 48C down to 35C maximum after half hour the card overclocked to 2177......

Also tweaking the curve atm, with the new MSI AB. I can do happily 2164 @ 1.075v (GPU 8323 on Spy), 2177 @ 1.081v (GPU 8350 on Spy) and trying to figure out the final speed for the 1.093v

Just finished fitting my EVGA hybrid kit to my founders edition and taken it for a quick spin on Time Spy. At default settings max temp was 40C and it boosted as high as 1873 on the core. I think the core speed was similar to when it was on air but the temp is just the 43C lower!

Now to see what it can do when pushed

Edit: Just to add the efficiency of these cards it amazing. Flat out my system draw is now 350 watts at the wall. This is for a system that is 20-30% more powerful than my dual 780's which used to draw 750 watts! A little less power due to removing the water cooling loop and going back to AIO's and the 780's had a few extra millivolts but amazing none the less.

Aircooled not. 85C max.
Watercooled doesn't matter, because only if the pump dies you will get more than 45-48C. Assuming you have adequate loop.

Wrote it on another discussion by mistake

Set Voltage 100% & PL to maximum. (my Armor goes to 121, others 150, others 101).

Try to make a linear (by using the slide bar as normal) curve to give you something like 2164 @ 1.075v. Lock it with L on the new MSI AB and run a bench. If crashes lower it to 2152 (-12) and set 2164 at 1.081v and 1.093v. Rinse and repeat until you have stable clock.

When you complete the 1.075v, start with the 1.081v.
Add +12 to the previous clock and start working the way down if crashing. If not. Move to the final point 1.093v add +12 to the previous clock and start the way down.

2189 @ 1.093v is the maximum anyone managed without shorting the resistors or heavily modding the card. And even then 2200 is usually what they can get out of the GTX 1080.

After 1.093v the values are irrelevant, no card is using them, so set them all the same as the 1.093v point, even the Strixx with the 1.2v BIOS doesn't. Only the Galax that was presented at Gamescon. And had a beast overclock. (but not going on sale).

The whole point is to try keep the card bellow 40C to avoid the voltage limiter coming ON by default at 42C. I achieved that by replacing the EK TIM and EK Pads with Thermal Grizzly. The Kryonaut is 50% better on transferring heat (8.5W/mk the EK Ectotherm, 12.5 W/mk the Kryonaut) and the VRM pads more than twice (EK 3.5W/mk, Grizzly Pad 8 8W/mk).

All of them are the same. Until we manage to edit the temp limiters at 32C and 42C, we are stuck.....

The maximum allowed is 1.093v atm for all 1080s regardless if they are advertised with unlocked 1.2v bios like the strixx.

If you fiddle with the curve, and wrote above how to try to make a good overclock through it, you will find your card & cooler limitations
