The Polaris RX 480 Owners Thread.

Hi guys. just wanted to ask some questions on the TriXX software for Sapphire.
1. How is everyone finding the new version? I tried the previous one and found the UI and general responsiveness awful, so gave up. Is the revamped one any better?
2. When making changes, what should we do re: Wattman? Let's take fan curves.. if i have one setting for a fan curve on TriXX and set something else on Wattman, which one wins out? How about clocks/voltages?
3. Does the new TriXX accept application profiles?

Thanks!

I just saw this Youtube video on the XFX RX 480 (so many Xs, surprised there's no RX 480X lol), it's the one with the swappable fans and whatnot. What really surprised me was the power consumption, which hovered around 100W for the most part. It's rather shocking (in a good way), since the RX 480 is rated at 150W. Can others who have this particular card confirm that it's the XFX one only or is it like that on other 480 models too? Or is it just a one-off and this guy somehow messed up measuring power?

I got curious and tested my current 970, it seems that you can find power consumption in Afterburner, it's one of the top options. Alas, for me it gave a percentage and not wattage, but the percentage is based on the max rated power. I got 87% on a 150W 970, which transalates to around 130W. I'm not sure how the guy in the video got actual watts to appear.

Mine hovers around 100-120watts when it's watercooled at 35-40c, once it gets hot it seems to consume more which further increases heat output, Joys of 14nm I guess because Intel cpu's are the same. On air it was pegged at 90c, and running around 150-170watts.

Power consumption shown in MSI Afterburner is not accurate. You need to monitor it at a hardware level to be objective.

Also XFX sent Jay a super binned sample, not all cards will do 1475Mhz at 64°C.

Very interesting none the less. I'm wondering if AMD are refining the 14nm process, or if that really is just a one off. Could also be XFXs RX480 configuration or even driver progress. Would like to hear back from some XFX owners.

Yeh indeed, would love to hear feedback from retail purchased XFX GTR owners :)

Worth noting Jay is testing in an open air bench also, something that not many are doing!

I think I heard that the XFX actually has a copper base and has a rather nice cooler in general, although the looks don't really do it for me. I'm not sure if his other 480s were also tested on an open bench and with the same drivers.

In the end it still doesn't perform much better than competing tech or AIB's.

I'd hate to go through the hassle and not have one of these golden eggs.

How good is XFX's RMA support?

You would have to compare it to the GTX1060, really. They only seem to have the 1070 and 1080 present in those benchmarks, those cards are 2 or 3 times the cost.

I'd say the chances of getting a card like that are slim but I am wondering if anyone else has had cards like that from recent stocks. Regardless, I'm unlikely to get a 480 myself, I need something with notably more power, crossfire is a consideration, however, but I may still need 2 cards regardless for the performance target I'm aiming for.

What is it you need to do? More than gaming I hope!

Well if it could oc to 1450 it could achieve near this.

Welcome and on TROH.:)

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your RX 480.

Wondering if there is something up.

Did a cinebench test, old 7850 got 96fps, 480 only 98fps.

Bf4 ultra settings around 60-70fps, high around 80-90fps. 7850 wasn't far off the fps in high settings.

Not sure if i was expecting more, but maybe just showing how much cpu is a bottleneck??

CPU bottleneck for sure, the FX CPU's are terrible compared to Broadwell-E/Skylake.

In fact you probably would have been better served upgrading your CPU/mobo to an Intel platform instead of buying a new GPU.
