New phone time.

What do you want from a phone? Do you need a smartphone type with the ability to run Symbian software or similar? What sort of style phone would you like - Candybar, Flip etc? Are you willing to pay any money for the phone or do you want a free phone with the contract?

For myself recently I've had both the K750i and the W800i, both of which should be free on pretty much any contract. Although they are essentially the same phone the K750i has a better keypad and subjectively just feels and looks a bit nicer although it doesn't come with as much memory as standard.

I'd recommend the nokia 6280, great alround phone, great camera, hooge screen, and all the bluetooth 3g gubbins etc, or, if you can wait, the N80 around march, 3mp cam, wi-fi (i think) and anything you can think of lol.

Yeah a smartphone would be good, probably a phone that has a lot of features that i would never ever use

The Nokia N70 is the top smartphone at the moment, in my opinion. 2MP camera, 3G, radio and lots and lots of software available for it.

If you're wanting toys don't even bother with symbian tbh, get a phone running windows mobile :) if you're REALLY not bothered about the style get yourself an XDA exec / spv m5000, have absolutely everything you could imagine on a phone :> but if that's too big and you want something of a decent size get an m500 / tmobile mda compact etc, absolutely fantastic functionality.

everyone's probably seen it before but here's my m500:

Doesn't have 3G, but that's not a problem to me. The xda mini s / mda compact II both have wifi integrated and have a built in keyboard, where as this requires a card and to use onboard keyboard, but it is thinner and also has a faster processor. It's up to you :) the onscreen keyboard sounds like a lot of hassle but it really isnt when you get used to it.

My sisters boyfriend has an n70, and it really doesn't even come close to this :).

it isn't big at all, and is fine for calls :) i've made over 600 minutes of calls this month, and not had any problems with it. lol in fact i'm posting this from it right now :)

as you can see it is only marginally bigger than the k750i which i'd consider a small phone. it's just a bit wider to incorporate the far larger screen, and is actually thinner. Because of the shape it gives the illusion of beingy big, but when you handle it and compare it to another phone it really isn't :)

rG-tom: I'm looking into getting this, but the screen looks very easy to scratch when in my pocket, wouldn't want to dish out that much for something so easy to damage.

Also does anyone have a Qtek 8310, or i-Mate SP5, or whatever else its called :p? I'm torn between a normal looking phone and the m500 which has a lurevly touch screen and would probably be better and easier to use when i set it up for GPS navigation.

Thoughts?

Sorry dont want to hijack your thread Eva01 but i thought its best keep it all in here as it seems we maybe after the same type of phone.

I've just upgraded from a Samsung D500 to a D600, and its a great phone TBH.

Had a Samsung X600 before the D500, and all of them have been mint phones.

Just a shame the D500 became so popular, now everyone has it or the D600.

Tempted to check out the M500 - That photo of it next to the k750i has really turned it around in my eyes.

As others has said, on it's own it looks mahoosive! but I know just how small the 750i is and that's mightly impressive.

Camera quality ?
what is involved in getting it WiFi'd up ?

To get WiFi on the M500 you need an SD WiFi card @ ~£50-£60

The M500 is commonly available sim free as the Imate Jam or Qtek S100. A 128MB RAM version (64MB is usual) is also available (Imate Jam 128MB or Qtek S110).

A new version with built in wifi an 128MB RAM will be available soon called the Imat Jamin/Qtek S200. The K-JAM/Qtek 9100 is similar to the Jam but has a bult in sliding keyboard and is also thicker.

There's also the new Palm Treo700w (it runs Windows NOT Palm OS). That has a built in keyboard (tiny!), NO built in wifi and the display resolution is 240x240 (Jam's are 240x320)

... and is a Verizon exclusive for at least 6 months. You won't see one over this side of the pond for a long time, if at all.

just to clear a few things up :)

The wifi sdio card for the m500 can be had for £28 from a competitor and it works very well (sorry about the crap picture:)

Also, the version with built in wifi and slide out keyboard is already available on o2, but as i said it makes it a third thicker and is also running a 200mhz processor instead of the 416mhz in this. Apparantly it's similar to the AMD vs Intel arguement but a lot of people have reported it being annoyingly slower in actual use even though it does have twice the memory. It's available on o2 as the xda mini s and on tmobile as the MDA vario.

The screen is more durable than i expected, and you can get very good quality screen protectors for it that don't lower the quality of the screen for about a fiver.

The biggest let down coming from the w800i (had it for a week before deciding it was far too primitive) is the camera, it's not that good:

Sample Picture one

There's a sample.

It also runs tomtom extremely well with a relatively cheap (£45 from the bay) GPS unit (the bt77) and would probably run even better with a slightly more expensive one. None touch screen mobiles arent anywhere near as easy to use for tomtom due to the fiddlyness of having to use the keys and the joystick etc, as well as the tiny screen none of which are good factors when driving :)

Any more questions about it, fire away

I wasn't looking very hard for wifi sdio cards as my Qtek (aka JasJar) doesn't need one :p (it's a 'bit' bigger than your combo tho. :( )
I briefly had a K-Jam which I returned as the slide out-keyboard was too small for me.

I played around with TomTom on an SPV C600. Using the joystick and keys is fine for navigating around the menus and lists (favourites, POI's etc). I found it awkward when entering postcodes and addresses, but I imagine someone who is used to texting a lot would probably be OK.

Just phoned orange - did all the usual rubbish about threatning to leave but they still would not even offer me the phone!!!

Business people only or new customers!

GRRRrrr I'm fuming...

Anything else I can try?! I'm on a student deal (£25/mon for 1000txt + 120 anytime mins)

Also is this version available on any other network? Or do the others only provide the thicker wifi enabled versions? (dont like the sound of that).

You'll probably get a much better deal if you cancel the contract then sign up as a new customer. Sounds silly I know but it often works out better.

1. Get an upgrade to some other phone. I went from a Sony P900 to SPV C600 for free.
2. Get the new phone unlocked by Orange - £20 and guaranteed legitimate.
3. Buy an unlocked Qtek S100 (Imate Jam clone) for £320. I got a QTek 9000 (Imate JasJar clone).
4. Put your replacement sim in your Qtek
5. Sell the upgrade phone. I'm keeping mine to use with a PAYG SIM

or start a new contract, which I did to get my P900 originally as they wouldn't upgrade my lost Samsung. :p
