Howdy. Just got back off holiday and have some money to spend on speakers.

Not much, talking about 50 notes and was looking for a 2.1 setup running off an onboard sound card.

Now I want the best bang for my buck but I have other things to buy with my money so £50 is roughly my limit.

I am looking about now and I am tempted by the Philips MMS321. These are 2.0's not 2.1's but the speakers have the sub in them. Was thinking of them not taking up much space but i'll find the space needed for the sub anyhow.

So whats good on the market? Good to look out for and what to advoid?

I game a lot on this computer and also listen to tunes but never watch movies on it. That's left to the home cinema else where.

I have to ask this whenever someone is on a budget with limited space: have you considered headphones? Koss PortaPro (and it's variant: SportaPro and the KSC series) is a nice starter headphone: detailed, fast, with good bass slam. Senns as people are undoubtedly going to suggest are good too, although the former are perhaps more "exciting". If you don't need to share, and don't mind headphones, then it'll be much better use of your money IMO (and you get change back for the ones I suggested).

I'd prefere speakers really. I don't particually want to be stranded by my computer when I listen to tunes.

On another note; I've seen those speakers but didn't really no much about them. But my price range is not going up now even if they are good as I have just sheared my back bike hub. grrrr...

Ooooo how about the Altec Lansing 5051GT's? Its 5.1 surround but with a twist. These seem do-able as I don't want rear speakers as such but has anyone herd good things about these?

JBL Creature speakers should be around that price range and are very good for the money.

These are less powerful and physically impractical if you havent got space o a desk. I believe the bass/treble controls are on the sub so you do need to place it close by as opposed to under a desk or something.

Why do you need to fiddle with the bass/treble once set?

There is a volume control on one of the satellites, but everyone I know just sticks the sub under their desk. Nothing special about it.

I usually adjust bass/treble etc depending on what genre of music I am listening and what quality is. So personally the creative would appeal more to me as it has a cabled remote I can leave on my desk while the sub is underneath.

You don't have trebble/bass controls in windows?

Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 Speakers are supposed to be great 2.1 speakers if you can find the extra dosh.

You're best to leave everything to flat... and if you really have to fiddle use the EQ in your chosen software. That goes for all speakers!

Philips MMS430, £40 inc delivery and they look/sound excellent

100w RMS (50w sub, 25w satellites), very loud with very little distortion and good sound on everything I have used them for including games, films and lots of diferent types of music.

Indeed they do sound good. But to clarify, the RMS pwer is 30 + 2x10 W = 50W.

Someone might have to correct me as I am not that hot on audio but RMS is the more accurate power rating. I think the 100W in the philips above is PMPO and not reliable.(?)

ANyway, I found this thread about an OCUK forum use with those Philips:

Sure looks funky.
