neighbour had lubricant sprayed through letterbox

neighbour came round today asking if we had sen anything while they were on holiday as someone had sprayed lubricant through letterbox,

Any ideas what this would be about? Is this a new twist on poo through the box? Or some new way for burglers to gain access?
