Hi all

Can anyone help me out here please?

I have recently installed Vista on a raid 0 36Gb Raptors.

Now something is using my HDD all the time which is getting really noisey and really annoying.

Can anyone tell me what is causing this to happen?

Thanks

if youve literally just installed vista then it may just be vista indexing all your files , does it for first few days or so

Vista hammers Raptors and any HDD in 1st few days till it all Prefetches and Indexes.

I kill Indexing and System Restore and it tames it down, can also add Readyboost Drive and help a Tad more.

There is also an issue with Vista+Raptor+Nvidia 8800 cards (not sure on new GT and new GTS), issue is the HDD PCB cant be fixed but there is a half cure from THG site.

ive got a 74gb raptor and an 8800 GTS and run vista

please expand on what this issue is, because i dont have it ?

I don't know about the 8800 issue and haven't read the article, but I do know there's an issue with Vista and ICH9R chipset with certain older 8MB Raptor's and Vista. XP's fine, and other chipsets + Raptors are fine , but basically if you have an Intel ICHR9 + older Raptor's then Vista won't install if the disks are set up on a RAID array, and crashes/hangs during installation. Unfortunately this bug is still present on Vista SP1, I've checked (have access to it via MSDN.) Hellishly irritating because the only real workaround is to either not use RAID in the BIOS (duh, not a solution if your goal is using RAID) or to install on another disk in the system (duh, what if you don't have another disk?) and then image/migrate back onto the RAID array.

I am aware about the 8800 and raptor issue. The issue is with the 150GB Raptors, not the others that I am aware of (waits to get home to check). Will post a link later/tomorrow when i get back home as i dont have it here in work.

Thankfully i dont have the the ICH9R motherboard, have the new 780i board so should be ok on that part.

Seems like Vista Disk Indexing is the cause as its starting to settle down now :) Thanks for that. If it was to carry on i was getting very tempted to install on a new hard drive and not run raid it was getting that bad.

I have also noticed that Vista is taking a lot of space up. With all the updates (bar 1 which wont install) it is taking up 45Gb of information :o. This is with basic programmes such as firewall and anti-virus on it. Games, photo software etc are all based on a seperate HDD.

I have already killed system restore, but how do you disable indexing?

And thanks for all yoru help, been very useful :)
