I've seen good pictures taken in Edinburgh but I've never seen it myself. I went out a couple of nights when I was up in Kinloss to try and see them but no luck.

Usually the further north you go the better but there are bound to be some companies on google who do these sorts of flights. Might be an idea to check those out as to be honest i havent a clue.

I know that the further north you go the more chance you will get to see them, I have been looking at flights to iceland (600+ quid) and northen norway/sweden 300+.

I am asking if anyone has been and where / when.

This is one of the reasons.

sounds stupid but saw one about a year ago down here. Spectacular I must say

See I know you can sometimes get lucky and see them all over england, but im looking for something a bit more than a "maybe" chase, I am looking at northern norway/sweden, I am thinking the easiest/cheapest way to do this is Ferry from across the river then train, but im not sure about the trains over there.

Doesn't help you much, but I just step out my front door. Quite visible around here at times.

Last year they were bright enough you didn't need headlamps on at midnight......

I went to Stockholm last year in October, on the way back (night flight) we got to see the Northern Lights pretty much all the way home. it was green like the pic you posted pretty cool :)

return flight was ~£100

Ive seen them a few times when I was out skiing when I lived in Norway. This was in North Telemark as well, relatively south in the country, so your a lot more likely to see them right up north. The Fins always came across as being somewhat weird(Sorry any Fins reading this) So on that basis, i'd say North Norway or North Sweden. :)
