I'm trying to list all of the expenses that people generate every month, so I can work out how much its going to cost me to rent a place every month. Here's what I've got so far, am I missing something, it doesn't seem like a very long list?

- Rent
- Gas
- Electric
- Water
- TV Licence
- Council tax
- Train ticket to work
- Car tax
- Car insurance
- Petrol
- Food

Ones I missed:

- Phone line
- Intarweb
- Contents insurance
- Mobile phone contract

If it helps, these are the things I have on my spreadsheet to try and predict what my expenditure will be when I move out in a few weeks time....

Rent
Council tax
contents insurance
Electricity
Gas
Water
Landline
Broadband
Tv Licence
Mobile Phone
Car Insurance
Petrol
Misc Car Expenses (Tax, MOT, Servicing)
Train to work
Food shopping

I can actually go slightly better than that and add the figures to each item that I have come up with. Things like Electric, Gas etc are based on guesses for a 2 bed flat having spoekn with other people and erring slightly on the less optimistic side.

Joint Expenses (These will be split between two people)
Rent 850
Council tax 130
contents insurance 20
Electricity 40
Gas 40
Water 20
Landline 15
Broadband 30
Tv Licence 11

Totals (Joint Expenses) 1156

Individual Expenses (These will just be paid by me)
Mobile 40
Car Insurance 80
Petrol 40
Misc Car Expenses 30
Train to work 259.6
Food shopping 150

Totals (Individual Expenses) 594.6

Not a biggy but don't forget those things like toilet rolls, toothpaste, washing powder and all the other cleaning type things; they don't get bought every day but they add to the monthly outgoings.

If you have on-street parking you may need a residents permit, depends where you are though :)

You seem to have covered pretty much everything though :) I'd just add an arbitrary miscellaneous hundred quid to it as well as it always seems to work out more expensive than you think!

Are you renting your own place? Brighton is a pretty expensive place to live, I'm amazed you can manage on £650.

sounds right to me

on to watch out for is that many gas/elec companies are leaving DD payments low despite near 100% increases , ther are many thousands of folks getting into arrears

2 people in a 2 bed flat, will be out the house most of the day so only in evenings and weekends. 2 showers per day, 2 or 3 loads in the washing machine per week, no garden to water, washing up done by hand.

It might be slightly out but from others I've spoken to it seems roughly in the right ball park.

You might want to think about some other insurance like British Gas Home Care or Direct Line Home Response 24 cover if you don't know a lot of tradesmen who can help you out.

This is seperate from contents/home insurance if I remember correctly.

I'm actually paying about 70% of the rent until the other person finds work,

The bottom few lines on my spreadsheet...

Income p/m after deductions: 1,843.00
Total Outgoings 1357.1
Disposable Income 485.90

Once the rent is split more evenly (although I'll still pay slightly more as I have the larger room and en suite...)

Total Outgoings 1229.6
Disposable Income 613.40

Oh you are talking about metered water then - it wouldn't be £20 a month otherwise, at least is isn't here.

Only 2 people in my house in the evenings and at w/e. Same as you around 3 loads of washing/ have garden dont water it (housepipe ban) - dishwasher once a day.

Sorry, should have made that clearer :)

Metered water is certainly a pain if you live in a large household. At my family home my parents pay an absolute fortune, but then, they do use loads of water. They pay about double what they did at the old house where htey were on flat rates.

No need if it's a rented place, AFAIK that's the landlord's problem?
