Obviously, the best place is Clifton but the prices are insane - £200k/£250k for a small 1 or 2 bed flat.

Any ideas of nice areas that have some value for money? Would prefer to be within commutable distance to M32/M4 as I travel to London from time to time.

cotham, redland, bishopston, kingsdown, ashleydown, horfield

I do a commute down the m32 -> m4 to Chippenham for work and i live on Zetland Road and it's fine, do it in about 30 minutes doing a chillaxed and cruise controlled 70mph :) the way back is more of a pita mind :(

The nicer areas you might wish to consider are Cotham, Redland, Hotwells and St. Andrews.

If you are going to London frequently, remember there is a pretty good train service that runs into Paddington from Bristol Temple Meads.

You could try Emmersons Green for a more suburban feel, and should be cheaper. Little bit further out of town, but still good access to the M32 (the London side of it rather than cutting through town) and local supermarkets. Have a drive round it to get a feel for it. Buildings are mostly new brick builds, so it doesn't have the same charm, but it's a nice area with mostly young families. It's a compromise between the affluence of Redland/Clifton and the horror of Fishponds/Eastville

Are you in Emersons?

OP- what do you want / need to be near to?

As has been said it's quicker to train it to London than drive; 1h 50m with very few station stops.

You say live/buy, so are you considering renting too then? If so then Clifton isn't actually that much more expensive than other locations close to the centre.

No, we were going to move in that direction from Staple Hole, but ended up moving up north instead. It seemed like a good compromise if you wanted somewhere that wasn't rough, but couldn't afford the "nice" areas and all the property crime that comes with them. I wouldn't buy a house there, but I would've lived there.

Ah cool. We're living in Emersons, it's ok except for the ring road at rush hour!
It's not a named affluent area but that's no bad thing :)

Exactly. Clifton is terrible for break-ins because it's known for having wealthier residents. Saying that, we did get broken into in our place in Staple Hill. That's just because Staple Hill is a dive though.

Lol :D
Yep, Emersons crime rate is quite low tbh. Downend is significantly worse which is odd tbh!

Eastville / Easton, St. Pauls, Knowle West, & Hartclife are really nice parts of bristol.
