How do I make my Eclipse as quiet as possible?

.....cause the hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm is getting annoying.

The CPU fan is running slow my on the side of my Ninja HS, and i have two Amber Akaska fans one at the fron and rear.

So I assume its the HDD's which are causing the low humm noise? their are three of them.

Anyone any ideas about what i can do with them or how so silence the whole thing, was looking at suspending the hdd's but does anyone know of an effective way of doing this?

Fit rubber grommets in the hdd cage holes. Complete hdd silence then.

Is there any (non competitor) places that you can get rubber grommets, can't say I've ever really seen them for sale.
Could do with doing that myself, does it even help to reduce seek noise?

The Eclipse does enhance the noise from the hard drives when just using screws. My 74Gb raptor sounds quite loud.

I need to get round to getting some rubber grommets for mine, You should be able to pick them up form B&Q or some place like that.

Are your Akasa Ambers running at full speed? I found them quite loud at 12v. Ive current got mine half way on a fan controller.

Im not sure what you mean but hassarding a guess do these slip on the scres, kinda like a washer?

Nope, i got the Akaska All in One thingy...managed to attach them both to it and after some fiddleing got them down in speed, its just that depressing "ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" going on the background, I mostly use mine for a lot of music production amongst the usual stuff. Hence why im trying to get it down as much as possible.

Was thinking of putting my 6300 back to stock speed and removing the Ninja fan, but to be honest, I cant notice any real sound coming from it.

Yeah pretty much. Best thing i ever did tbh. I'm picking up a raptor soon and will defo be doing the same with that. You can pick em up at any car part stores etc

Yup, I know the noise. That kind of noise is coming from the front fan. The rear does not sound to loud, even up quite high. Try stopping/unplugging the front fan when the PC is on see if this is the noise you are getting.

I also noticed since ive rebuilt my Eclipse is that ive got a much lower noise, as tho one of the side panel is rattling. Again try adjusting the screws. Slacken them off slighly.

I've noticed 3.5" HDD's are very loud, even the quietest ones when idle, the whine from the motor is just annoying, so I am switching to Laptop Hd's, they run quiet when idel and when active make little noise, can't wait for the seagate 7200.2 series to come out, they are fast as desktop hard drives when transfering data, 50mb/s easily.., and access time is not that bad either..., at 1/4 dimensions of 3.5" drives, 2.5" drives take less place so more space for air to flow around it and hence easier to cool...

Great guys thanks for the info, will take a look over the weekeend at rubber grommets , and see what difference the front fan makes.

Would fitting the grommets with the screws on the fan help reduce some noise? even alittle?.

i normaly soft-mount my case fans, not sure how much a diff it makes though.

the Eclipse is a great case, however you have to do a LOT of stuff yourself, it is a canvas you can make great things of, but apart from the great design and airflow, the rest depends upon what you put in it.

Wel ive owned it for about well over a year now and dont see myself changing it.......maybe when I get a complete new rig....but was thinking of COMPLETELY dimantleing the whole thing and starting ground up making every possible effort to reduce noise.

Dont know though, it might be one of those "good idea at the time" kinda things lol.

My eclipse arrives tommorow i plan on getting
Hard Drive Vibration Damper
you put hard drives in these and mount in the 5.25 bay
which will also increase airflow at the bottom hopefully
and grommets which can be purchased from a certain high st store
when i'm done my pc is going to be near silent.

then you can mount a rad on the front, and watercool.

Fan rubber Mounts

At work ive just built a PC in a Antec Sonata and had some rubber fan gromets left over. So I took them home and replaced them with the screws I had in there on my Akasa Ambers...

Its made a big difference to sound. The Front fan used to make the hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm noise which used to go through the case at half way on the fan controller, I dont hear that any more and as for the rear. I can't hear it at all.

Well worth doing.

You may find that the long dangly bits are supposed to end up inside the case, not outside.

I really need to borrow my Gf's camera to get some shots of my case.....

Thats what I thought, but the Antec Case had them fitted as standard like that. You just cut the long ends off. Does not matter what way you have them. On the front I have them the other way.

Havent really tried the fan grommets im sure every bit will help, but one thing ive noticed is that the eclipse front panel is nasty as in it creates a vacum tunnel hum for the front 120mm fan.

If u ditch the Front panel case u will see and hear exactly what im on about. Theres no way to reduce this annoying and loud hum and im using accoustic dustproof 120mm fans set on lowest speed... well apart from removing the front!

This is exactly why im looking at a better designed case perhaps one with a proper well contructed front with air vent holes so its not blocking 90% air flow from the front to the hdds sadly cant see any decent cases yet well one that matches the size/ease/design of the eclipse62 !

Okay I tried this.

Took the HDDs out, and managed to get some tough but light kind of bungie/ elastic typr material.

Weaved a couple through the front HD stack and layed the Hds ontop of that.

now that seems to have reduced some noise,BUT, I seem to notice the fan noises even more!

So im gonna have to find what I can do what i suspect is a problem with the front fan and HSF, was thinking of taking the the HSF from the side of the Ninja HS (which is stupily tight IMO), and suspendint it just infront of it.

Would this work/ help much?

Hi

Ive just got this case and installed everything into, not had long enough to fiddle about with it but its okay at the moment but I think there is room for improvement.

Ive currently got 2 x Noctua 120mm (800rpm) case fans, Scythe Ninja Rev.B HSF, Zalman Cu-700 on my ATI x800xt, Tagan 420w PSU which has 2 80mm fans and ive disconnected the fan which was on my nforce4 chipset as it was the loudest thing in the case.
All the fans are running at full speed as I dont have a fan controller and haven't connected them to anything to make the 5v.

At the moment I can hear vibrations more than anything which I imagine is from one of the side panels; perhaps blu-tack can solve this?

I think i may also get some of those rubber washers for the hard-drives (5 hdd in total) which may improve things.

Im interested in getting a fan controller so I can turn the fans down to there lowest setting at night, the Akasa fan controller for 4 fans looks like it should do the trick but im curious at to whether I can turn off the lights behind the nobs/dials as id find them quite annoying if i left the PC on over night.

Also, is there anyway to turn off the hard-disks which arent being used. Im using Vista at the moment and there is an option to switch off hard disks after a certain time but im not sure whether this switches them all off or just 1. I have my hdds setup that there is 1 which is OS and programs, 1 which i download stuff onto and the rest are for storage. It would be good to have the storage ones off until i come to access them.

Any help is much appreciated.
