Hey,
If I grab myself a 120hz monitor, and I use my 6850 with it ( 3d capable ), what more do I need to play games in 3d?
I understand I need the glasses, can I use the nvidia set or will I need to buy something from ATI / some other glasses?

How would I go about setting this up?
Thanks!!

Steve

It appears it's not possible at the moment. - Although theoretically amd cards can do 3d they don't have any driver support for it, thus relying on 3rd partys support.

This 3rd party support currently only works with select 3D TV's, some projectors and some specialised monitors. Ati 3D is not compatible with standard 120hz monitors.

So to sum it up, what you are proposing will not work.

I think that if you ask iz3d they will tell you if it is possible

Aye, but isn't the choice of monitors much more limited (ie. the only 120Hz shutter glasses monitor that works with it is the Viewsonic V3D241wm)?

Personally, if I was going to spend £300-400 on a 3D monitor + shutter glasses + software then I would just swap the AMD card for an Nvidia one for the sake of an easier life and more choice in screens

But you still end up with a dodgy 3d (9 day wonder) monitor.

Not convinced by 3D gaming?

Believe me, I am in the same boat.

However, if some folks do like 3D gaming and are happy to use it regularly - then the Nvidia path seems to be the best. Especially since you have a wide choice of monitors, so even if you give up on 3D and just run it in 120Hz 2D then you are using a nice bit of kit - like this ASUS (review here).

However, personally I would much rather have IPS over 120Hz.

I'm not fooled by 3D at all, we are simply not meant to see in a 3d plain. Our eyes are not made to focus at different depths and make adjustments a 120 times a second. Its like every 5 years someone thinks we have made some type of human evolutionary jump and starts pimping 3D as the next big thing again.

%100 agree on the IPS monitor, once the 3d fad is over, high resolution S-IPS screens running 60FPS+ will get us moving again. 120Hz low res TN monitors, even without 3D are taking PC gaming backward IMO.

Edit: Sorry for dumping on your thread Nutterz.

iz3d would be the people you need to get in touch with. Or you could sell up and get the Nvidia only licensed kit.

If by using a 120hz tn panel my aim improves and frag count increases straight away, i fail to see how that is taking my gaming backwards? This makes my gaming better. Its personal preference. Some people prefer high res colourful pretty graphics. Others would prefer to have a smoother more accurate gaming experience. For me, whether you choose ips or 120hz tn, you are going to be missing out on a good feature the other monitor can give. I personally use 120hz tn for 3d and multiplayer gaming especially fps. I do not enjoy these games as much on my ips panel u2711 as i get fustrated when my aiming is harder and my reaction shots are made worse due to slight lag (shots a regularly make at 120hz). For all other games eg single player games were my performance isnt such a big deal i will use IPS as the overall pic quality is far better.
Also after 18 months of using 3d vision my eyes are still being fooled into seeing 3d depth, maybe i have made this evolutionary step you talk about.

Phil.

120Hz even TN is a massive benefit over 60Hz even IPS for hardcore FPS gaming.

While personally I don't think 3D Vision is the next logical step forward for gaming, its nothing like as bad as your making out jigger... nothing like... the nVidia solution is a solid well supported offering - strangely I think if AMD were offering it you'd be all talking it up rather than negative.

Hey OP, I've recently bought a 5870 and have a 120hz lcd screen.

It works at 120hz, HOWEVER, on XP I notice a bit of flickering on the screen before loading video content, once it's playing it's fine, just a bit annoying. On Windows 7 however, I do not get any flickering and 120hz works, but it just feels a bit jittery in game so I'm putting this down to ATI drivers as I'm not the only one who has this problem. If you want a straight forward option I'd suggest just going for an nvidia card for 120hz.

AMD fanboy/Nvidia hater to the extreme, it's so sad.

Low res 120hz TN panels? the majority run at 1080p, how is that a step back for gaming. Getting the Asus VG236H 120Hz myself next month, from what I have read once you go 120Hz you won't want to go back to 60Hz.:)

How does thinking 3D gaming isn't wotrth it make some one an AMD fanboy?

The anti Nvidia tone is in the majority of his posts, it's getting very boring now.

OT, if the OP wants to go 3D than I would go with with Nvidia as others have suggested as they seem to support it much better than AMD at the moment.

That's original  you may have noticed that I don't hate or fanboy any brand now over the past months, I couldn't care less now. But it's best to weed out those that carry on with the sad fanboy mentality.

I don't reccomend getting a 120Hz panel with ATI/AMD GPU as theres a reasonably high chance you will run into issues. If you really want to play games in stereo 3D then 3D Vision w/ an nVidia setup is the only complete solution at the current time - iz3d and similiar offerings have nothing like as wide support, documentation and polish.

Personally I'd say try and give it a whirl before spending money on it - I don't find it too convenient for day to day gaming and while the effect is pretty decent I found the trade off in having to drop some advanced quality effects and the impact on my precision and response in games (I mostly play multiplayer fps tho) means I've not really used it much past the first couple of weeks after getting it.

As has been mentioned in this thread unfortunately Nvidia is really your only choice for a good 3D experience at this present moment in time.

I made this post a few days ago, hopefully it will help the OP in making a more informed decision.

There's plenty of stuff been written on these very forums concerning AMDs 3D (HD3D as it's now been labelled) solution just do a search.

I think the main bugbear is you still have to buy 3rd party drivers to get it working, why AMD can't sort their own 3D drivers out for their own cards is beyond me?

Once you've bought the drivers you then have to source the 3D glasses, again these will have to be third party items as you won't find dedicated AMD 3D glasses to buy at this moment in time.

So after paying for your 3D drivers and sourcing some compatible glasses you'll then need to find a compatible monitor to play your 3D games on,

apparently not all 120Hz monitors work with it atm, in fact judging by this list there's a grand total of 3!

Nvidias 3D vision on the other hand is pretty flawless, setup is a breeze, most games work really well with it including lots of old titles,

there's plenty of new titles coming out that are 3D vision ready, and it will work on all existing 120Hz monitors, basically it's all integrated beautifully.

So to conclude, at the moment there really is no comparison between Nvidia and AMD when it comes to gaming in 3D,

hopefully AMD will catch up enough to give people more of a choice but until that day comes Nvidia have 3D sewn up.

Some more reading for you here :)

If it wasn't for cheap low res 120Hz screens we might get some progression in resolution to push PC gaming away from the consoles before the next generation catch up.

3840x2400 and over is what we should be moving to. 1080p is laughable for a high end PC and TN screens are a dead end.
