Hiya,

Looking to get my mum a new set of knives for mother's day and wondering if anyone has any recommendations on makes/models?

Needs to be something I can get from the highstreet tomorrow and cost no more than £60 for a set of 5. Would consider buying less knives for the same money if it meant getting better quality

Thanks peeps,

Andy

How about getting her 1 global knife with a magnetic block, it also sorts out the next birthday and christams as you can then buy her some more knifes.

there are a lot of fakes on ebay, the sets of 13 globals in a case for example, You could get a nice set of sabatiers from your local TK maxx store, they usually have some great cookware in stock and i always look there, i'm a chef by trade. I think globals are a bit overkill for the home cook, yes, they look nice but worth the money for the budding home cook, i don't think so, saying that, i have a set of shuns hung up on my kitchen wall which i bought for my trasde, but daren't take to work incase i lose one or one gets stolen lol. Now they are the best knives i've ever used. I'd still recommend sabatiers for the hobbyist though, not too expensive but still a professional edge on them.

Thanks for the suggestions. Think we may go with AcidHell's idea of getting one nice knife to start with, as my sister's just mentioned that there's a cookbook she's after as well.

There's a few reasonable looking block sets out there but they seem to be £75 upwards, which is out of our price range unfortunately.

Has anyone used Henckel knives before? John Lewis do them and they;re the same sort of price as Sabatier and Global, but some of the Amazon reviews suggest that they're not actually that great unless you buy the "Pro" range.

Thatnks for the TK Maxx reminder Wez! Had completely forgotten that they have a huge range of knives in there. Annoyingly the nearest store is a 20min drive away tho (I say annoyingly because I live a 5 minute walk from the centre of Portsmouth!). What the hell though..its for mothers day after all :)

I went with Global.

A good all round knife would be the best thing to get first off. Something like a 15-20cm knife.

Something like the G-4 18cm Oriental cooks knife, or the G-2 20cm Cooks knife. Not too large but still good at most things.
You will also need a sharpener - the Minosharp 'Global' Water Sharpener for £19 is probably the best bet to keep it sharp.

I'm up to 7 Global knives at the moment.

GF-35 - 30cm chefs knife
GF-33 - 21cm chefs knife
2x GSF-24 - 15cm utility knife
2x GS-36 - 20th Anniversary 11cm knives *These are my most used. They rock*
GSF-22 - 11cm Utility knife *was given this for christmas - not used it much*

Also got a Minosharp sharpener for a basic sharpener, but also got the ceramic whetstones to give them a proper sharpen.
