Hey guys

cant find a specific thread on here or the internet for this and I'm hoping it will be ok for me to ask this here.

Im looking at purchasing one of these, and saw this picture by EasyRider;

Now I know hes using a PS3 for this here, but can there be a similiar layout for the WD TV Live? I.e; images of the dvd brief summary etc?

(is it even possible? I've seen someone mention it but not sure its possible).

Anyone help me out? :)

Don't think so yet, although a lot of work is being done with the Live, everything I've read has said that workingon the layouts and themes is much harder and a lot more work than the first version of the WDTV.

Give it time it may well be possible but at the moment, (unless it's changed in the last week or two) it's not yet.

thanks valve

Do you think its worth purchasing the WD TV Live or waiting until they fixed the layout stuff? (so it gets like the image above)?

Having just had a look, on a forum relating to the Live, I noticed that work has begun on some different displays for the it, so hopefully people will begin to make steps towards being able to get things looking like that pic.

Personally I think the Live is a great piece of kit. I've used it (with the factory firmware) since it first came out and have found it to be really good. It plays pretty much everything I've thrown at it, with only one or two problems which I think related to the ripping I did of a dvd or two.

Not dabbled with custom firmware as of yet nor network shares etc as I just use an external drive I have but it seems to be fine.

I have my WD TV Live connected via Ethernet to my upstairs PC where I share my streaming content. If you have the Live setup to use thumbnails (default view I think) and your content has .jpg image I believe this is displayed. This gives a similar view to the OP, but by no means as glossy.

I remember reading something saying that the problem with getting a really fancy ui on these things was they just don't have the processing/gpu power to run it.

Hi mate,

Thats media Browser for my then...HTPC

I ditched it as it was too buggy and laggy for me.

Now I use Windows Home server and a PS3.

By the looks of things, themes etc are starting to be developed for the Live, and on the previous generation people have managed to get movide sheets like this working. There were some techniwues using movie sheets created on the PC (automatically using special software) which gave a background fo each fil, which was then displayed when the file was slected etc, so it's entirely possible that in the near future, this will come to the Live.

no. I have my WD TV running custom firmware and streams from my server in the garage. I have it showing thumbnails but you can;t get it to be a glossy as above. It basically will show thumbnails etc but nothing more than that. However for £70 (original one not the newer WD TV Live), it a bargin as a 1080p capable streaming box!!!!

Not the most straight forward of things but have google for "wdlxtv firmware". You will need a usb to Ethernet adapter that is supported by that firmware(tells you somewhere on the site about the supported models).

Well the main differences are the ethernet port and the support of the HDMI 1.3 standard, and since you've already cracked the network issue, you'll have to decide as to whether or not HDMI 1.3 is important to you.

Apart from that, it looks better and is a bit smaller, the menu has been overhauled, and navigation has been improved. Apparently it only outputs sound over optical when playing a movie with DTS though, so that may or may not be a problem for you.

You can get pretty darn close to that interface using some custom apps and a popcorn hour. Take a lot of setup and faffing around with but the potential is there to do it without a PC.
