I know some people have been successful on here with converting their MKV contained videos to compatible formats (i.e. mp4 container), however I can't be bothered to spend hours re-encoding all my existing videos, so went on the look out for an easier solution and found this :D

Here is a quick and easy way to convert an MKV to an MP4 for the 360...

1. Using MKVmerge demux the video and audio from your MKV file.

2. Using whichever software you choose, convert the audio to MP4 (remember it has to be 2 channel AAC LC). This can be done with a number of different programs.... choose whichever one you are most familiar with (ie. meGUI, foobar2000 (with the proper plugins), etc.)

3. Using h264info change the level of the video (the .h264 file) to 4.1 (This will not re-encode the video so it will only take a few minutes to re-write). Make sure that the output filename is different than the input or it will fail.

4. Using MP4Box or YAMB (to avoid command lines) remux the video and audio.

That's it! You are now ready to play the new file without suffering though a lengthy re-encoding process!

Remember that this only works if your video bitrate is already below the max of 10 Mbps (with resolutions of 1920x1080 and a framerate of 30fps).

Hope this saves some of you lots of time!

The above is a direct quote from another forum; there seems to be some talk of scene related stuff there so I won't paste a direct link to the forum, but credit goes to J^^ for originally posting this up there :)

lol :p

I've also just found GOTSent which does all the above for you :D

Give it an MKV, click convert, it gives you a compatible MP4 (fine with both PS3/360 apparently)

Doesn't get any easier than that :D:cool:

Unfortunately not. I'm not sure why that limitation exists though because, as far as I'm aware, there's absolutely no problem having a 6 channel AAC within an MP4 container :(

Use Prologic II or if youve got 7.1 system Prologic II X

It will give a 5.1 /7.1 soundfield from 2 channel.
Okay not like an original but should help keep you guys content if not go out and buy the damn HD DVD or Blu Ray :D

MKVs are evil. Cheers for this.

I hate badly marked up files, If I end up with an MKV. Means I have to start all over again! Now it's just a quick alteration and away I go. Much nicer.

I shall be trying this tonight. I was hoping someone would find a simple way to convert it all. I'll let people know if it works tonight. Thanks all.

One thing that I found out last night; you have to split files up if it's over 4GB in GOTSent. The 360 will refuse to play it otherwise due to the random 4GB limit for MP4 files, even if you use a filesystem that can support it (HFS+).

Don't waste your time doing all that - download Videora 360 Converter, use MKV Passthrough mode, wait 5 mins and your MP4 is ready :)

Where's the MKV Passthrough mode? All I see is a crap load of adverts and options to fully convert? GOTSent is a one click solution by the way, with no adverts/no bloated interface :)

I just tried that GOTSent program. It is a shame you have to download it, and two other utils/programs/codec and install them all separately as otherwise it was great. A few clicks later and my 1.2GB MKV was a 1.1GB MP4. All I needed to do was rename to .avi and my 360 played it flawlessly. Only took about ~10mins which is good on this aging Athlon 64 3800+.

Top stuff. Big thanks to Phil99. Cheers.

Will 360 ever support .MKV?

I cba to convert/edit files, just wanna sit down and watch them :(

Highly unlikely imo. We all know what most mkv files are and why they would pose a potential revenue loss to MS overnight. (Think of the TV shows MS sell on the USA video marketplace for example).
