New XFX 7600GT AGP + jumping white horizontal lines across on screen

HI guys,

Today I picked up my new XFX 7600GT AGP card and excitedly installed it with the latest Nvidia Forceware drivers. I tried 3DMark 2003 / 2006 and the marks are far higher than with my old Radeon 9500pro....now onto Movies and Games....

I fired up Medieval Total War 2 with default auto video options. The intro worked fine, until I reached the beginning of the tutorial....then white lines started to appear and jump across the screen - I would describe it as the effect you have when a pop-up box appears on your desktop behind a game you're playing. I then tried to play a movie in Nero Player and Windows Media Player 11 - no matter what I put on the player hung - this didn't happen with the 9500pro. I tried uninstalling the Forceware drivers and trying the Manufacturers disk instead - the same thing occurred.

It's strange - could it only be happening when the card is under load?

I have a Shuttle SN45g SFF cube, 1gb ram, Athlon XP-M Socket A chip and 200w Shuttle PSU. I'm guessing that either the card is screwed or the PSU isn't enough.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Stewart

I forgot to mention - I have an Acer 19" widescreen LCD running at a refresh rate of 60 - I've tried putting Vertical synch on in the Nvidia Control Panel but no joy. Also disabled AGP Fast Writes in the BIOS....

run ati tool artifact tester. sounds like a borked card.

Thanks, I've just tried it as you suggested and it ran for 5 minutes with no artifacts appearing. I have a screenshot - but not sure how to attach it.

either borked card or PSU not powerful enough. Try disconnecting your DVD ROM and running something that produced artefacts (that may give you the extra power required to run the card). I have a shuttle SN41G2, and I have to get a 250W PSU to run my 6800 AGP.

Also make sure it isn't on a split or shared molex.

Thanks Melbourne, I'll give that a try tonight. Thinking about it I might it on a split molex.

It's really bizaare that the card is fine with some things but not others. It seems to pause a lot, even when surfing the net. I can only think that in particular when running apps that use the card - movies, games etc - that it tries to use the card but can't get enough power, and then the problems occur.

I think the powerusage of a gfx card goes up with the amount of work it has to do. Could be that either it isn't getting enough current on that molex, or it's min usage is less than 200W but the peak is more than 200W.

Good luck with it. The shuttle 250W PSU is a pricey upgrade, but it is a little quieter than the 200W and it might solve your problem. There is also a 300W out there also. Maybe if some people upgrade to that you could pick up their old 250W s/h.

7600gt usues under 40w of power so no point even looking at your psu unless you suspect its a real shoddy bit of work.

Just in time - I was about to click 'Submit' to order a 250watt supply :p

Must be a stuffed card then - it's very strange as no typical artifacts but I guess they all go in different ways.

Any other ideas?

I would suggest using the 84.21 drivers or at least trying them, i have had a few problems myself with the 9xxx drivers, i.e. on 2142 i got a red edge to the intro movie and after around half an hour my game would lock up and red dots appear. Apparently its an issue with SLI that quite a few people are having, but you never know it might fix your problems too :)

Thanks Murphy I'll give it a go.

I noticed that the XFX retail box mentioned a minimum of 300w/350w power supply, I guessed that the shuttle cube PSU might have some issues. Does it really only use 40W of power?

I've just received a reply from XFX Tech Support - not sure if this will help but I'll give it a go:

[PAULV - 2006/11/23] Hi, thanks for your message, This may be caused by a few factors. First ensure that mainboard drivers/chipset drivers are fully updated, uncheck ‘allow hardware video overlay’ (in the relevant media player settings). Then go into Advanced Display Properties: Geforce settings: Colour Correction: Apply colour changes to: All. Please lower the hardware acceleration in Control Panel-Display-Settings-Advanced-Troubleshoot. Also try setting your AGP aperture size to 256Mb. This should help, but please keep us posted. Kind regards Paul

Can be a case of 'the straw that breaks the camel's back'. My 6800GS needs only 75 watts, but it pushes the power usage from below 200W to above 200W, necessitating a 250W PSU.

I've just ordered the 250W PSU anyway - the 200W old PSU was getting a bit long in the tooth and is over 3 years old. It should arrive tomorrow. In the meantime I'll try some of the measure the XFX Tech Support suggested.

It should be a bit quieter compared to your old one, as well as hopefully clearing up the problem you found.

Your old PSU is probably okay, just not up to the job you need it for. Might be worth flogging it, I sold mine quite quickly...

Strange stuff - I've got home and tried some of the things the XFX Tech Support suggested. By lowering the Graphics Hardware acceleration in Display I can now watch movies through Media Player - it is no longer not displaying the video output and hanging like before - quality isn't great though.

I'm not sure whether this points to the card being knackered or power supply again though?

I've tried moving the Hardware acceleration slider from Off slowly up one notch at a time. It is fine until DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration is enabled - then back to original problem with video not displaying.

Help - can someone help me identify what this could mean?
