Garden Fence Treatment - Spray or Brush?

So... its come around again... the bloody awful job of treating the garden fencing and decking.

The decking I don't mind so much but the fence painting has taken me days in the past and is a sod of a job  I have the equivalent of 20 panels to paint, this coming weekend if the weather warms and doesn't rain.

I am sorely tempted to get one of the spraying kits rather than the old fashion brush route. The adverts make it look incredibly easy however the online reviews appear to be mixed of these products.

Has anyone here any experience and views on spraying the fence stain rather than painting it? Is spraying more messy and laborious due to the sprayers being crap and clogging all the time?

Cheers!

The other consideration with spraying is overspray - you'll need to mask up/shield any areas that you don't want to get speckled, which might be a non-event or a major issue depending on your garden.

Brush, you can work the preservative in to the cracks/ splits better.
I have used my hvlc sprayer, but find the brush is better.

Depending on the fence construction, roller it!

Our fencing is 7' x 6" planks, and a mini roller with an emulsion head on it does the job in less than half the time of a brush...works well with featherboard as well

Plus the stupid neighbour used one of those sprays, and covered all of our, their and the other neighbour's uPVC in brown speckles. I was lucky that I was in and managed to get it all off before it dried..the other neighbour had to replace all of theirs

Spray it, I sprayed mine in an hour which would have took a couple of days, I had a big sheet of correx to place behind when I came to the neighbours wall.

I used a big garden pump up spray thingy as the nozzle is quite fine and intricate and slung it after, used Creocote as you can't buy Creosote normally any more.

Also it's quite toxic and can cause skin problems so the least exposure the better.

I'd do it again tomorrow.

Spray,i done mine a few years ago for the first time and done 19 panels in a hour, got really good cover as well spraying them.

so its a mixed bunch of opinions here as well then! :-D

We've got rain forecast all weekend so it's at least another week of deliberating.

My feel is that I'll at least try the spray, and if it is a disaster then I can always get the brush out. £15 on a spray device isn't so bad.

Bare none treated boards, use a brush. The friction of the brush pushes it into the grain. Previously treated boards, spray them if you have the kit, if you dont a radiator roller works grand too.
