We had an extended hands-on with the new motion controlled Pro Evolution 2008, and can happily report that it looks like Konami is about to produce one of the biggest leaps forward in the series to date.

After the last round of the annual soccer slug between the 2008 editions of FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer, you could be forgiven for thinking that Konami was perhaps a yard or two shy of the pace....Konami's product still came out on top, but only by the slimmest of margins.

....What Konami has done with Pro Evolution on the Wii is undoubtedly impressive however, and the development team have clearly thought long and hard about how best to implement the unique controls of the Wii into the series.

Sounds very positive for a change after 360 and PS3 versions. :)

It's going out this first quarter.

Hah, I was thinking of starting a thread about this too, although I saw a different preview I think.

Reposting the youtube video from the last thread, because I missed it first time too: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oM2Qh1MSzcI

It looks utterly, utterly cool, and as long as there's no slowdown, and the multiplayer works well enough (online! no friends codes needed! a ranking system! \o/ ), I can't see it not being fantastic. Has shot up the ranks to one of my must-own games for the Wii now. And it's out fairly soon too!

The learning curve looks really high, in that it looks like you need to be on the ball (excuse the pun) constantly. Looks interesting but I'm not sure if I'll bother.

The passing into space looks good though, at least you can dictate exactly where the ball goes.

I'm hoping it'll be kind of like it is with the other Pro Evos. Yes there are all sorts of tricks you can do, and strange button combinations that allow you to do all sorts, but you can still score by just mashing the basic buttons if that's how much you know.

I read the preview and I just got underlying doubts from the previewer. Not as if he was writing it off, but I don't think he sounded utterly confident that it would work. If it gets a decent review I'll buy it. I've held off buying Fifa 08 with this as a preference.

pes 2008 looks amazing and i cant wait for it to come out.
Should be a lot better then fifa 08 for the wii!!!!

Anyone else pick this up? My copy arrived this morning, although I've only just been able to give it any time.

Played it for an hour. First impressions:

Very slick, smooth interface. Easy to move players about, set formation etc on tactics screen.

Graphics are functional, animation is good and the frame rate doesn't drop even with the addition of all the extra arrows and pointers that accompany play.

Well designed tutorials ease you in. You've got 3 methods of moving your player on the ball - 1 with the analogue stick and 2 depending on how you use the point function. Tutorials cover this (and others) well. You'll need them.

The first match you'll play, you'll win comfortably. I won 7-1 with England vs Scotland as attacking is incredibly intuitive, quick and makes it so easy to put the ball about. However, you'll also be totally confused at points with the amount of combinations of buttons and the 11 players you'll have at your disposal. It's not especially easy to defend either at first, but this became easier and easier as time progressed.

I really enjoyed every match I've played. I've been frustrated with the defending at times, as you get to grips with marking, moving players. And no, you cannot physically move 1 particular player in the same way as before (ie: with the analogue stick). However, it's easy enough to tackle and you can get the ball in a more involved way - it really does feel as though you're controlling the entire defence (well, you are, essentially). A quick lift of the remote calls an offside trap and it works so effectively.

My first hour leaves me impressed, and I can't wait to get back on it once I get my living room back from a girly make-up party. My only frustrations, so far, are remembering the best way to get the ball back in defence with all the marking options, and remembering how to do 1-2s and feints. It's so easy to do through balls and pick Beckham-esque passes and you'll score some really good goals easily. My other frustration, kind of, is with the shooting. It relies entirely on a flick of the nunchuck, and you've got no sense of how much power you're putting on the ball. However, it's a very minor thing and in the grand scheme of the game I think it's just remembering this isn't the conventional PES we're used to.

Overall, thumbs up.

Yeah they would say that with their advert in the game. IGN have no credibility left regards reviewing Pro evo games after over looking all thats **** in 08.

I picked it up yesterday aswell. First impressions were good, the tutorials are great for getting you started, as said above, it does get surprisingly intuitive after a few games. I have FIFA 08 on the Wii also, and I don't think I could one was better than the other, they are extremely different. The new Champions Road feature is great, personally I think its better than the normal Master League.

I've onloy played a handful of games, but it has definitely left its mark, I'd agree with what was said above about the shooting, it seems to be the one thing you have least control over, but I can deal with that. Cracking game.

Looks like I'm going against the grain but I didn't even bother getting past the tutorial, completely lost interest and hate 'normal' games that have been re-made to fit in with the Wii's point and click controllers.

Too much of a faff to learn what 'gesture' does what, and nowhere near responsive enough for this type of game.

Back it goes :/

I thought it was actually very responsive. My only problems were remembering (or in fact being able to read) defending. I get better with every game though - the speed at which you can move the ball up the park by picking your passes is excellent. Give it another go before it goes back.

I'm tempted to pick this up. A friend of mine reckons this is the closest a football game has come to the actual thing as, rather than controlling one guy arcade stylee, you're controlling the entire team and can put the ball anywhere you want on the pich.

I think it's a real Match of the Day game in terms of watching runs and analysing play etc. I can't figure if you'd like it or not, because it's really quite fast paced - but it's nothing like Mario Strikers or traditional FIFA/PES games anyway.
