Wii PES 2008 preview

Looks like I'm going against the grain but I didn't even bother getting past the tutorial, completely lost interest and hate 'normal' games that have been re-made to fit in with the Wii's point and click controllers.

Too much of a faff to learn what 'gesture' does what, and nowhere near responsive enough for this type of game.

Back it goes :/

Yes every football game should play exactly the same as the one before it...
Sure some games don't need the wii mote but this version would never work on the PS3/Xbox. This is more like an RTS than arcade football game.

Similar thoughts here. Going forward is a joy when the passes link together as planned but i still suck at defending

I can't figure if you'd like it or not, because it's really quite fast paced - but it's nothing like Mario Strikers or traditional FIFA/PES games anyway.

My favourite games are Halo 3, Smash Bros Melee/Brawl, StarCraft and Mario Kart DS if that helps :p

Attacking is fun, defending is terrible though, why oh why they took away direct control of the defence is mind boggling.

RTS=click on unit, tell it where to go/what to do.
PES 2008=click on player and tell it where to run to, who to tackle/pass to.

Defending is certainly much harder.

I cant work out if that's a dig at my post or not?

I never said all football games should be the same, it's just that I don't like it when games are (IMO) made to fit the Wii's controllers when they just aren't suited to them.

They've done as good a job as they can with it on the Wii, however for me it's just not either enjoyable or interesting. Gesture based moves are just too random in when they come off in my experience, whether that's down to me or the games coding is irrelevant - it still results in me not enjoying playing.

I'm sure this game will get good reviews and be well received, but like a lot of Wii games it's just not for me :)

Defending gets easier and easier. In fact, I would say it's tactically better. I can now force a player out on to the wings or to back track by marking out his options, have two players pressure, prepare my wingers for a counter etc.

I agree that it would be nice to at least have the option to directly control 1 player as before, but once you get your head round defending it's very satisfying to close an attack off and launch a counter. Certainly, once you get the ball from a defence the way you can get the ball up the park is fantastic.

It's not for everyone, clearly. But I really, really like it. And I still can't figure out if you would Kreeee - probably not! :p

Picked this up and so far far so good, can't see it replacing FIFA08 as this households multiplayer game of choice but its still a gooden for the sp stuff imo.

If you have friend codes post them here so I can take on your champions road teams :D

Got it today. First impressions are that it's ace! I love the depth of the controls, and how they've made it work so brilliantly on the Wii. Unsuprisingly, I'm still getting to grips with defence (I find I'm not marking the players off the ball quick enough), but attacking is really, really good. It's just so satisfying being able to move players and place passes exactly where you want.

I'm amazed at how little response this thread has got! Do people with wii's just assume there is no such thing as a decent "adult" game possible for the wii and not bothered?

It's the first football game (on any console) that I have been happy to sit down and play solo since the first International superstar soccer pro on the PSX. I can usually only stand these games with a bunch of mates.

The control config really is quite amazing, you can place exact passes at exact times, move players up, man mark, play an offside trap, and yet not always have direct control of 1 player. It sounds really odd, and does play that way for a while, but once you get to grips with it, it makes perfect sense.

Playing a ball down the wing, and making your striker burst into the box on the far side by dragging him with the wiimote, curling in a inch perfect cross placed with the wiimote, and then banging it in the back of the net because of the perfectly timed run you made him make is really very satisfying :)

Sure I've only been playing this since yesterday, but it was just about all of yesterday - which I don't do these days, but it's one hell of a game IMO.

Thumbs up from me. Give it a try, a refreshing take on a game genre which has gotten very stale as of late :)

Ive had this game for about 4 days now, and it had grown on me a lot, it takes a good few games and hours to get to grips with how it works, I have learnt the basics now and I am banging them goals on lol :D..defending seems to be more difficult though.

A few things...

The camera seems to be very far away from the action (and there are only 2?), I know you need to be able to see the action from a far, I guess it will take time to get used to it...

I cant work out how to do any tricks/shimmies!?..How do you do that trick when you can flick the ball up in the air at your feet (you did this on the PS2 version by flicking up the left analogue stick) :(

Are they any option files available for this?

I've not read anything about how to do tricks and the like, I must admit. However, you can shimmy on your runs by using the remote-drag-and-point to make your man on the ball run, and then moving the nunchuk stick (down makes him stop, left and right makes him move to that side, and up speeds him up a bit).

Option files, not seen any I'm afraid. I think most PES fans seems to be overlooking this game in favour of the PS3/360 versions. Which is a shame, because it's ace.

The only thing that's really bugged me about the game has been the waggle-to-shoot business. It's not so bad for open play, but it makes free kicks entirely random, and they were bad enough already. It would just be nice to have some control over how much power you put on the shot.

Anyway, we need to get friends code sharing people. I've only had one game against a mate so far, so I need some serious human competition to hone my skills! :D

Yeah post your friend codes up lads, theres a mode to play against friends champions road teams (ai controlled) that I want to try out. Not played as much of this as I want because it ruins my FIFA08 play in the league. Might have a session of it today \o/

I'll stick my friend code on later, although I don't really play online all that much. Working my way slowly through the Champions Road, on to the 6-league stages and I've got 3 4-star forwards. Shame Lescott is about my best defender though! :p
